Photos: 'Subira' premieres in Mombasa

Award winning Kenyan- Danish production  'Subira' premiered last evening at the Nyali cinemax Mombasa.

Fans got the chance to interact and take photos with the cast at the red carpet before the film started screening at 9pm.

The event was attended by a number of fans and industry players including veteran Kenyan actor Ken Ambani.
 

Subira which translates to patience in english is about a free-spirited young girl in Lamu who struggles to live out her unique dream of swimming , against local customs and an arranged upper-class marriage.. But does she have the courage to take her dream on, against all odds?.

The film which scooped 5 awards at the 2018  Kalasha film  was directed by Sippy Chadha.

Jomvu Mp Badi Twalib was among graduands who graduated today during Mount Kenya University 15th graduation ceremony which took place at the main campus in Thika.

Badi who is serving his second term graduated with a second class honour in business management with human resource option.

The youthful Mp took to social media to celebrate the achievement.

"The strongest factor for success is Self-Esteem. Believing you can do it, believing you deserve it and believing you'll get it!My graduation today at Mount Kenya University-Thika Main Campus!!#Education_is_the_key" he posted

He graduated alongside Starehe Mp Charles Njagua 'Jaguar'.

 

 

 

The Wasafi team in conjuction with their local partner in Kenya NRG radio have released the names of artists who will performing at the Wasafi festival Mombasa edition on 26th December.

Susumila is the only artist from Mombasa who is in the artists list.

The artists expected to perform includes Khaligraph Jones, Redsan, Arrow Boy, Timmy T-day, Naiboi and Susumila, the team from wasafi will be headed by Diamond Platnumz, Harmonize, RayVanny, Lava Lava, Mboso and Queen Darleen.

The event will take place at the Mombaas Sports club.

The Wasafi festival tour officially kicked off  on 24th November in Mtwara (Tanzania) and has since taken place in three regions including Mtwara, Iringa and Morogoro, this weekend they will be in Sumbawanga.

The platinum level is the highest on the sustainability meter after achieving the Gold and Bronze levels.

Planet 21 is Accor Hotel’s sustainability commitment to provide a positive hospitality experience by working with its employees, involve its customers, innovate with its partners and work with local communities towards making the community they operate within better. The sustainable practises and positive results revolve on actions such as waste management, energy conservation, reforestation projects, and protection of children against abuse, supporting local products and participating in causes that improve the community.

The projects that led to the hotels victory include:

  • Implementing the WATCH programme, which stands for We Act Together for Children. The hotel has stepped up efforts to eradicate the sexual exploitation of children by training the teams on sexual tourism. Ibis Styles Nairobi Westlands is currently supporting the Mary Faith Children’s home that aims to rehabilitate children that have been victims of sexual abuse
  • Supporting causes such as Women4Cancer-Breast Cancer awareness and prevention.
  • Rhino Charge-Wildlife conservation in the Aberdare Forest
  • The First Women only walk that aims to protect against sexual gender based violence
  • The hotel encourages long staying guests to reuse bed linen and towels to change after second night use as opposed to daily. This way, there is conservation of water and reduced pollution from the cleaning chemicals used
  • Energy Management practices are in place for example having motion detecting lights in areas like guest corridors that don’t need lights to be on at all times
  • Eliminating plastic bottled water and soda, straws and packaging from the hotel restaurants and bars and replacing with biodegradable/recyclable materials
  • Recycling of waste water from the hotel’s reverse osmosis plant that is used to water gardens and is also used for cleaning
  • Maintaining a kitchen herb garden where our Chefs harvest herbs for daily use
  • Implementing a Zero food waste policy to both hotel guests and staff
  • Waste management is in place such as recycling used cooking oil that ordinarily goes to waste to
  • washing soap that is used by our housekeeping teams
  • Separating our garbage into kitchen waste that goes to composting, paper and glass waste that goes to recycling

 

This award goes on to indicate that all efforts by the ibis Styles Nairobi Westlands team to save our environment are worthwhile and community development and conservation begins with you and I.

Shipeta replaces Auma at Haki Africa

Vocal political human rights crusader Shipeta Mathias has joined Haki Africa as a rapid response officer, a position that was left vacant after Francis Auma moved to Muhuri few months ago.

The position is the heart of the organisation and this appointment is a clear indication of the organisation having faith in youth leadership and new breed of human rights crusaders.

Before the appointment, Shipeta was the chief of staff in the office of former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar. He was also a student leader at Kenyatta university.

He vied for the Jomvu parliamentary seat in the last general elections but lost to Badi Twalib.

Speaking to Ommy Dallah Shipeta confirmed his appointment stating " Yes, it's true. I applied for the position , was called for the interview and I passed".

"Currently as we are speaking am on my first assignment in Malindi" he added.

Fans will have an opportunity to interact and take photos with the cast at the red carpet beginning 8pm before the film starts showing at 8:45 pm  according to a programme from the organisers.

some of the cast include Brenda Wairimu who stars as subira, Tirath Padam , Nice Githinji, and Melvin Alusa.

According to the Director of the film Sippy Chadha, Subira’s story comes from a place of deep personal experience.

The film scooped 5 awards at the 2018 Kalasha film awards including Best feature film(Ravneet Sippy Chadha and Vibeke Muasya), Best Director(Ravneet Sippy Chadha), Best lighting technician (Saul Ogada), Best lead actress in a film( Brenda Wairimu) and Best editing (Roselidah Taabu & Terry Kelly).

The film was first screened as a short film in 2008 and did well  Europe. It was also screened in Brussels as part of an African film festival.

Uganda will be represented by top award-winning diva, Sheebah, returning on the show for her second time. She will be joined by popular Ugandan music acts such as Fik Fameica and King Saha.

A roaster of first timers on the show from Ethiopia includes celebrated songstress Mahlet, to seasoned crooners Bisrat, Abush Zekele, Yared Negu and Rophnan Nuri.

Radio Rahma's reporter and sports presenter Luqman Mahmoud is set to join Bahari fm as a sports presenter. 

According to a source, Luqman will be replacing veteran sports presenter and reporter Mkalla Mwambodze who has since shifted to mother station Radio Citizen.

Luqman who is mostly referred to as 'Captain Lolo'  by his fans will be hosting kutubuti which runs every Monday to Friday from 9am to 10am.

The source also revealed that Luqman will be leaving Radio Rahma next week.

"This is his last week , he will be heading to Bahari fm next week". Said the source.
