President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday inspected the ongoing construction of the Shs 40 billion offshore Kipevu Oil Terminal, the largest of its kind in Africa.

The construction of the 770-metre long jetty, currently at 96% complete, is wholly funded by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and implemented by China Communications Construction Company.

When complete in April this year, the offshore facility will be able to load and offload very large sea tankers of up to 200,000 DWT carrying all categories of petroleum products including crude oil, white oils and LPG.

Speaking during the inspection, President Kenyatta, who was accompanied by visiting Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Mr Wang Yi, said the new jetty will enhance supply and ensure price stability of petroleum products in Kenya and the region by replacing the 50-year old onshore Kipevu Oil Terminal (KOT).

When operational, President Kenyatta noted that the new offshore jetty will save the country in excess of Shs 2 billion annually in demurrage costs incurred by oil shippers thereby contributing to a significant reduction in fuel pump prices.

“Once complete the new facility will be able to reduce not only the cost of fuel but also to ensure that Kenya is able to consistently have an adequate supply of fuel for our needs and development needs that of our people.

“This terminal once commissioned in a few weeks time will result in the saving of almost Shs 2 billion that we are currently paying every year because of demurrage occasioned by the long queues  of vessels parked outside our harbour waiting to discharge their product,” he said.

The President hailed Kenya's development partnership with China saying the arrangement had helped deliver key infrastructure projects, adding that the populous Asian nation was progressively opening up its expansive domestic market to Kenyan exports.

“Our partnership with China is not a partnership based on China telling us what to do. It is a partnership of friends, working together to meet Kenya’s socio-economic agenda.

“The old Kipevu Oil Terminal which for many years we have struggled with, was not able to meet the demands of increasing population, to meet the demands of the growing economy.

"We needed this facility to be able to cater for those demands and China was there when we asked for partnership in developing it," the President said.

He added: “They were there ready to work and walk with us hand-in-hand and that indeed is what we call a friend. We do not need lectures about what we need, we need partners to help us achieve what we require".

The Head of State said the various infrastructural projects implemented with the support of China had strengthened Kenya's economy.

He noted that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) had kept the Kenyan economy ticking during the slowdown occasioned by the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The President noted that SGR had significantly lowered the cost of cargo freight saying the price of transporting a container of tea from Nairobi to Mombasa had reduced from Shs 60,000 by road to Shs 17,000 on the modern railway line.

“Many said there was no need to improve the railway linking Mombasa to Nairobi and ultimate to Kisumu, Malaba and our neighbouring countries. Today millions and millions of Kenyans have benefited through the reduction in cost of travel between Nairobi and Mombasa.

“During this Covid-19 period thousands of Kenyans were able to take advantage of the SGR to travel to Mombasa and to ensure that atleast our hotels down here were not closed and our people were kept in employment,” President Kenyatta said.

Earlier at State House, Mombasa, President Kenyatta met visiting State Counsellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Mr Wang Yi who paid him a courtesy visit.

The Head of State and the Chinese Minister discussed a wide array of bilateral and multilateral subjects of mutual interest to Kenya and China among them the two countries development cooperation framework, regional peace and security as well as the global fight against Covid-19.

The President reiterated Kenya’s commitment to its development partnership with China saying the cooperation had contributed greatly to the country's transformation in recent years.

“Let me say as a country we strongly value the partnership between our two countries. Our political cooperation, our economic cooperation, our cultural engagement is something that we value and something that we look forward to deepening as we move forward.

“Kenya I can clearly say would not have been able to achieve many of our social economic development agendas without the support of China. And this is something that not only we as a government appreciate but also the people of Kenya appreciate,” the President said.

He expressed optimism that the continued opening up of the Chinese domestic market to Kenyan agricultural exports will help bridge the huge balance of trade gap that exists between the two economies.

“I am very appreciative especially as a farmer, on the movement we are making towards the opening up of market in China to Kenya’s agricultural products, am very keen myself to see that develop because the basis of success is if we are able to balance our trade,” President Kenyatta said.

Minister Wang Yi, who was accompanied by Qian Keming (Vice Minister, Minister of Commerce), Wu Jianghao (Assistant Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and his country's Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjiang assured President Kenyatta of China's continued commitment to supporting Kenya's development agenda.

Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs), Joe Mucheru (ICT), Ukur Yatani (National Treasury), John Munyes (Petroleum), James Macharia (Infrastructure), Peter Munya (Agriculture), Mutahi Kagwe (Health) and Betty Maina (Trade) attended the State House, Mombasa meeting.

Others were Principal Secretaries Macharia Kamau (Foreign Affairs), Kirimi Kaberia (Industrialization) and Johnson Weru (Trade) as well as Comptroller of State House Mr Kinuthia Mbugua among other Senior Government officials.

Ugandan star rapper NAVIO, celebrated as East Africa’s King of Hip Hop has released “Raha” - brand new single and music video, experimenting with Amapiano / Rap. Tanzanian music genius, Daxochali, who is renowned for his mastery in Amapiano, produced this song with authority to create a massive hit.

This is the first release off Navio’s upcoming studio album ‘Vibes Out The East’ (#VOTE) . Navio stands out on the new release, flowing effortlessly on Amapiano, the biggest genre sweeping through the African charts right now.

It’s a daring and bold move as many rappers have refused to take the plunge as compared to their counterparts in other genres.

Navio says “I spent almost more than 8 years in South Africa when I was younger and in my prime club years so I’ve always been influenced by the region’s sound and more. Plus with a grandmother from that side it’s always hard for me to ignore any trend from there.”

The track’s high energy music video directed by Sasha Vybz, who stays true to his style, crafting a timeless video paying homage to the scale of the song, with big sweeping shots and a choreography centered on Afro Hip Hop dance, calling out for freedom, and expression.

Navio says about the release, “Uganda has been locked up. No dancing, no concerts, no vibes and no good times allowed. Now that we’re coming to the end of that I think we needed an anthem that showed all of those qualities. Besides the fact that UG hasn’t been on the scene, we still have something to add to East African music and therefore Navcorp is proud to present the new hit to usher in 2022 - “Raha” - Leta Raha: bring on the good times!”

Seemingly not slowing down, Navio gets to exclusively share more about the upcoming body of work,

“The album is a bit more centered on Navio as compared to my 2020 album ‘Strength In Numbers’ whose whole theme was centered on the title and by that involving people I respect from across Africa. This next project ‘Vibes Out The East’ (#VOTE) is centered on my personal story and expression to the rest of the continent and world. It aims to still have that freestyle approach but push a new level of excellence.” he says.

Adiing,“The next divergence will be on this project in terms of experimenting with other genres.”

East African Hip Hop music, Ugandan music, Navio and all of his brothers in the industry are still very active and have a message for East African fans and beyond,.

“You can never overlook quality. This will never be a numbers game and the art form whether commercial or underground needs to actually contain ART. Let’s keep expressing ourselves and pushing further the right way. Support each other in East Africa and we will be the region to reckon with on the continent.”

Navio has undoubtedly proven himself in these dark times of the pandemic that tremendously had an impact on the music industry globally.

Having the most successful year of any rapper regionally, he released the ‘Strength In Numbers’ (SIN album) which sold 39,459 copies in the first few weeks before the street vendors pushed the sales to higher heights- off a well crafted boda delivery strategy in the heart of lockdown.

The album itself won awards - and the collaborations with Vanessa Mdee, Ice Prince, Joh Makini, Seyi Shay, Laylizzy and a Burna Boy Remix- makes it an instant classic. He had the first virtual concert in Uganda launching his album.

The duo is expected to jostle for the hotly contested Mombasa County governorship in the August 9th 2022 general elections.

The artist contracted have a huge following. They have the capabilities to influence their fan base to ascribe to a certain politicians agenda and vote for the aspirant.

In the 2017 general election for instance, incumbent Mombasa County governor Hassan Ali Joho used a similar campaign strategy through songs from legendary Bongo Flava superstar Ali Kiba and Susumila.

Jomvu MP Badi Twalib who seeks to retain his seat also recently had his campaign song dubbed “Badi Tosha” released by musician Chikuzee.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is on Thursday expected to tour the Mombasa port and inspect the progress of ongoing works at the new Kipevu Oil Terminal(KOT).

According to a statement from KPA acting Managing Director John Mwangemi, the President will be accompanied by the State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the People’s Republic of China.Wang Yi.

The visit by President Uhuru Kenyatta comes just weeks after he unveiled the first modern shipyard at Mtongwe Kenya Navy Base within the port of Mombasa.

The new KOT is an off-shore facility located at thePort of Mombasa, opposite to the existing Kipevu Oil Terminal.

The project consists of one offshore island terminal with four berths whose total length is 770m and one work boat wharf at Westmont area for landing facilities.

It also has five sub-sea pipelines which were buried 26meters under the seabed to allow for future dredging of the channel without interfering with the pipes. The new KES 40 billion Oil Terminal is financed by KPA and constructed by China Communication Construction Company (CCCC).

"Once complete the new oil terminal facility will have four berths (One not fully equipped) capable of handling six different hydrocarbon import and export products, it is also fitted with a Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) facility, crude oil and heavy fuel oil." said KPA acting Managing Director John Mwangemi.

Adding "It also has provisions for handling three types of white oil products (DPK- aviation fuel, AGO – diesel and PMS – petrol)."

The terminal will for a start be able to accommodate three ships concurrently with a capacity of 200,000 tons each.

A fourth berth has already been constructed provisionally, which will be fitted with facilities in future commensurate with demand, to be able to handle a fourth ship.

This new Oil Terminal will effectively replace the old Kipevu Oil Terminal situated on the mainland Port Reitz, which was built in 1963 to serve the then East Africa Oil Refinery (EAOR) which later became the Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL).

The Old KOT is a single jettywith a capacity to accommodate only one vessel at any given time. Then the discharge pipe sizes were smaller, product and discharge flow rates were also much slower although they served well at the time.
