Women And The Creative Industry

By Gloria Adhiambo

Being a woman in a male dominated field has so many pressures to it. A woman can not be one thing i.e good at music or acting, she has to come ready, she has to be physically fit, talented and ooze sex appeal.

This has always cut across to most women in the industry not just in Kenya but around the world.

These societal pressures have led to unwanted sexual favors by men in exchange for fame and wealth that can only be enjoyed per time.

Most women are forced to give in with the promise of getting gigs, being on rotation and being featured for interviews on the various media platforms.

Cases of sexual favours have been order of the day across the creative sector globally, some are known while others are talked about in hushed tones.

Some producers and radio presenters have turned into sexual predators and are known to be behind "The Back for ground" policy at all levels of the music chain has seen female some creatives give in with hopes of rising up the ladder and making it.

It is impossible to grasp the magnitude of what these challenges have done to our female creatives until forced to confront it directly.

I have had the privilege of meeting some of these artistes who have gone through sexual harassment in order for them to have their works or music featured on various platforms.

Some women in the creative industry have been forced to shelve their dreams owing to lack of funds to either produce their music, family obligations among other things.

Other issues that have crippled the rise of female creatives is unnecessary competition and lack of mentors to walk with them as they advance in their careers.

It's time for the established female creatives to hold the hands of their younger ones and guide them through the pros and cons of the industry.

Lastly is self-sabotaging oneself because of the Imposter syndrome always looking for validation and berating your performance.

How does one make it as a woman? Focusing on your purpose and blocking out the noise. Believing in yourself and learning to pick yourself up when you fail.

As a female creative believe that you have what it takes to make it and that  every opportunity you get is out of merit and not because your back was on the ground.

Temptations are there yes but be contented with that which you have and where you at, it's only a matter of time before you get to the top. Focus, Nurture and Work on Yourself because you owe it to yourself to be a better version of who you are.

Kenya has and is endowed with quite a number of female creatives who have gone through hurdles to be where they are, from hawking mitumbas, singing cover songs, doing other menial jobs just complement their music.

Artistes like Wahu, Suzanna Owiyo, Nyota Ndogo, Vivianne, Nadia Mukami are still holding forte and have shown that being a woman in the male dominated industry is still possible.

It's high time the upcoming female artistes rise up to the occasion and change the narrative by ensuring they are heard and vocal about issues affecting them.

Enough of playing the gender card, invite yourself to the table and take charge.

Tanzanian singer Ben Pol has expressed interest in marrying Zuchu.

In a video he shared on his instagram page, Ben Pol jokingly asks Zuchu's mother, Khadija Koppa to give him her daughter for marriage, considering his current relationship status.

"As you can see this is my mother and you all know my current situation. Let her give me the daughter" says Ben Pol.

Responding to Ben Pol's request, Khadija Kopa laughed about the matter without giving a direct response.

Last week Ben Pol  confirmed that he has filed for divorce against his Kenyan wife, Arnelisa Muigai.

The singer asked for space and privacy for himself and his family during what he has termed as  a difficult time.

"These issues are very private and since the case is in the Primary court in Dar es Salaam, I would not want it to be discussed further for the respect to all parties involved and with respect for the Courts law," said Ben Pol.

The AGCO Agriculture Foundation (AAF), a private foundation committed to ending hunger through sustainable agricultural development, today announced the second phase of a USD $125,000 project partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS)to respond to climate change and food insecurity in the Dadaab Refugee Complex.

The project began this month, with the goal of restoring degraded land, strengthening refugees’ food security and income levels, and increasing production of diverse, nutritious foods.

The Dadaab Refugee Complex falls within the expansive arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) of Kenya, characterized by hot,dry weather and high rates of evapotranspiration interspersed with occasional floodin in poorly drained areas.

Dramatic changes in weather patterns have caused prolonged drought and extreme rainfall, placing 209,584 refugees and 200,000 host community members living near the border of Kenya and Somalia in dire need of food and financial support.

Funded by the AAF, the first phase of the project focused on meeting agricultural and nutritional demands of refugees and host communities through the establishment of a mechanized farm for pivotirrigation and crop production.

“Climate change is a serious threat to the livelihood and food security of many marginalized farming communities. The impact reported from the initial phase of our project in the Dadaab Refugee Complex has propelled us to expand the project deliverables and continue this strategic partnership with the KRCS,” said Metti Richenhagen, Director, AGCO Agriculture Foundation.

Adding “This project demonstrates our commitment to address climate change and help farmers in the Dadaab camp and host community improve their soil health and build resilient food systems.”

The second phase of the project will support 6,000 beneficiaries in the refugee camp and the host community.

The goal is to promote climate-smart agriculture and soil fertility management practices, strengthen farmers’ skills in modern irrigation and mechanized agriculture, and create employment opportunities for vulnerable communities.

The KRCS will help farmers establish and manage their farms as well as connect them with local markets.

The vegetable crops, lentils and leguminous grass that will be grown during this project phase will support the livelihoods of local farmers and their families.

The project is also supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which maintains the water infrastructure serving the pivot farm and provides logistical support.

The Kenya County Government of Garissa donated the parcel of land for the project and helps identify vulnerable community members who can benefit the most from the program.

“This second phase of this project is the right next step to ensuring access to nutrition and improving the livelihoods of refugees and their host community,” said Dr. Asha Mohammed, Secretary General, Kenya Red Cross Society.

Motivated by a desire to make music that goes deeper than entertainment, in an emotional, introspective journey filled with music that calms, inspires, motivates, and celebrates the beauty and complexity of life.

Rising Nigerian afro-pop artist Kholi real names Chuwkuemeka Okoli has released his Album #StonesToDiamond.

Speaking about the album, Kholi says "In a way‚ the Album was written as Stones  personal therapy of changing his path and finding light, with each track helping tackle my own journey . I chose the title “Stones to Diamond” to symbolize the feeling of ‘security and strength.”

Adding “These two things are foundations from where hope can grow. I hope people can relate to my stories in their own way.”

Motivated by a desire to make music that goes deeper than entertainment, he is ready to unveil his new album, Stones to Diamonds.

On this album he dives deep into the topic of love to understand how it feels at it’s different stages, including when it has faded away.

Based on the emotions of discussions that he held with close friends, trying to understand their perspectives on love, Stones to Diamonds is an emotional, introspective journey filled with music that calms, inspires, motivates, and celebrates the beauty and complexity of life and love.

Kholi’s soothing voice earnestly soars over swelling strings and a jauntily plucked guitar on One, the album’s opener. From the opening minute, he has no fear in sharing how he feels towards the object of affection.

He captures the heady rush of new love where promises easily flow from our lips without worry. Yet the next song, DLM, shows him pleading for his partner not to leave him as subtle sax riffs dance in the background.

It’s this ability to authentically capture the feelings that many of us can relate to that makes this album such a rewarding listen for his audience.

Whether he’s singing about lust sparked by a beautiful woman in his presence on body language, convincing someone to give him a chance at love on Gamble, or inviting his lover to get away with him on Go, every song is written with the care and attention of someone that has taken time to understand how we react to the many situations that love can bring about.

Stones to Diamonds is a sonically cohesive experience despite its inspirations coming from a varied range of sources inspiration from artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Maroon 5, Drake, and multifaceted producer Gospelondebeatz led Kholi to a sound that invokes afro-pop, jazz, bachata, and RnB.

Throughout the course of the album, these genres intertwine seamlessly to create something brand new, a romantic backdrop for Kholi to examine the many aspects of love.

The sumptuous tones of his voice never feel in competition with the variety of instruments and musical elements.

Songs like Euphoria and the simmering Te Amo allow his voice to showcase it's range and honesty over instrumentation that feels familiar but also new.

Stones to Diamonds is available on all streaming platforms now!

Kholi is expected to jet into the country for a 3 week Media tour and meet up with local celebrities for possible collaboration.
