South Sudan, although a relatively young nation, has already made considerable progress in basketball.
The national team’s historic qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics is a remarkable achievement, especially for a country that gained independence only in 2011.
Finishing ninth overall, the team showcased South Sudan's potential on a global platform, making the nation proud of its athletes’ achievements.
Players like Carlik Jones, a standout at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and Wenyen Gabriel, currently with Maccabi Tel Aviv, serve as inspirational figures for South Sudan’s aspiring basketball players.
The Jr. NBA League provides the critical infrastructure needed to nurture such talent, giving boys and girls across the country the opportunity to sharpen their skills in basketball while also learning teamwork, discipline, and leadership.

Participation in basketball at the grassroots level is growing rapidly in South Sudan.
In season one, which ran from March 2024 to August 2024, 270 boys and 180 girls participated in the league, with many others eager to join future seasons.

The broader NBA Africa initiative, through its Jr. NBA program, has reached over 170,000 young people across the continent.

The league created employment for 30 coaches and 36 referees (18 male and 18 female) trained and certified by the NBA, as well as six media volunteers trained and given exposure working with the NBA digital team.

Mombasa Women Leader Sureya Hersi Dies
Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) party national treasurer Sureya Hersi is dead.
Hersi who has served in several leadership positions at the Coast region died on Friday morning at a Mombasa hospital where she was receiving treatment, according to reports.
She was the wife to renowned hotelier Mohammed Hersi
She vied for the Mombasa Woman Representative seat under the Republican Congress party, in the 2013 general election.

Honda Unveils New Motorcycle Model In Tanzania
Honda Motors has unveiled a new motorcycle model, in Tanzania.
The new model ACE 150 was unveiled on Thursday at the Serana hotel Daresalaam.
Speaking during the unveiling, Honda Motor Southern Africa's president Hideki Shinjo termed Tanzania as one of it's bigest and strategic markets in Africa.
“Tanzania is one of our strategic markets hence we are dedicated to supplying products of the highest quality at reasonable prices for customer satisfaction,” he said.
Shinjo attributed Honda's success in Tanzania to its continued investment in innovation."
Shinjo noted "“We are committed to creating innovative products like this new ACE 150 that does not just enhance human mobility but also benefits society as motorcycles are a source of income and currently one of the top job creators in both the public and private sectors,” he emphasized.
Arccording to Shinjo the new Honda has a more powered engine and is more stable on the road hence ensuring rider and passengers’ safety.
On his part, Honda Tanzania Country Director, Frank Mushi said the new Honda 150 is an improved version of the ACE 125 and 110.

China remains Africa’s largest financier of infrastructure.
In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced plans to build a “Silk Road Economic Belt” and a “21st Century Maritime Silk Road,” now referred to as the “Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).”
The BRI, the biggest development initiative in history aims to improve invest-ments, infrastructure, and trade in Africa, Europe, and Asia, to facilitate greater global growth and development.
In a publication titled 'The Belt And Road Initiative - Opportunities and Risks for Africa connectivity' by four scholars Nancy Muthoni, Alfred Burimaso Wang Bing and Salum Mohammed, strategic location of some countries, such as Kenya, Tanzania,and Somalia (the shore of the Indian Ocean), as well as Egypt and Djibouti(the shore of the Mediterranean Sea), make them natural BRI partners be-cause they connect Africa, Asia, and Europe. In addition, for these countries and many others on the African continent, joining the BRI can help them meet urgent infrastructural needs for their development.
"Chinese infrastructure financing may also help diversify African economies. First, infra-structure advancements could raise the profile of specific countries in Africa, and promote and attract more investment in different economic sectors. Secondly, due to better infrastructure connectivity, increased economic capacity may in-crease domestic productivity and foreign investment, leading to reduced cost of doing business." reads part of the publication.
Adding "Of all the direct and indirect benefits of closer China-Africa cooperation in BRI projects, trade growth and job creation are perhaps the most salient. More trade both intra-continental and international means more jobs for the African economies, which are currently experiencing a very high unemployment level among recent graduates. Providing jobs to these graduates will lead to more social stability and sustainable developemnts.
In an interview with the Oxford University Press academic insights, Professor Wenhua Shan, the Editor-in-Chief of The Chinese Journal of Comparative Law , noted the initiative was proposed with the intention of promoting economic cooperation among countries by enhancing the orderly free-flow of economic factors and the efficient allocation of resources.
"The ‘Belt and Road’ is not intended to replace existing frameworks of international cooperation. Existing international dispute resolution mechanisms such as commercial and investment treaty arbitration, and the WTO dispute settlement system, will continue to play significant roles. However, new mechanisms and facilities of dispute resolution may be created, and in particular the creation of relevant new platforms at bilateral, regional, or multilateral levels. For example, it has been proposed that a new arbitration centre should be established at Xi’an to help resolve commercial and investment treaty disputes arising out of transactions relevant to the initiative." said Shan.
Adding "It is expected that countries joining the initiative will substantially benefit from it. This has been demonstrated already by the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Silk Road Fund. To a lesser degree countries staying outside of the initiative may also benefit from its spillover effects. Of course ultimately the degree of impact on insider or outsider countries will depend on the degree of success of the initiative."
Among the projects that have been undertaken under the initiative includes construction of ports.
Tanzania is among the countries in East Africa that China is constructing a port.
In June 2021 when Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced that negotiations with China Merchant Holdings for the construction of the Bagomoyo port had been revived. The stalled project was resumed by the newly-elected president five days after a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to David Mutua, an expert on China - Africa relations, African Presidents need to put into consideration the economic and political effects of the partnerships.
"In as much as we know that China might be having good intentions with our countries but our leaders need not to go to the table empty handed. They have to do their homework and leave no loophole. They have to be careful not to lose their sovereignty since this seems to be also a concern from many quarters" said Mutua.
Adding " when it comes to job opportunities at the construction sites, let most of them go to the locals, they need to benefit directly from these projects, let the Chinese bring expertise."
His sentiments were echoed with Rajab Rashid, a resident of Daresalaam who emphasized on the need for the African governments to ensure that there citizens are the first beneficiaries.
"We need to be very careful to avoid things like exploitations. In as much as we need help but this is our homeland, we have nowhere else, so we should be the first persons to be considered. Most of us live hand to mouth and whenever we see such huge projects we expect to benefit directly."

Cyrus Barmasai and Grace Mwangi Win 21km Races at Mombasa Satellite Run Ahead of Sunday’s 21st Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon
Cyrus Barmasai and Grace Mwangi clinched victory in the men’s and women’s 21km races, clocking times of 1:16:52 and 2:24:03 respectively, during the Standard Chartered Mombasa Satellite Run.
The event, held at Treasury Square in CBD, attracted more than 650 participants and served as a warm-up for the upcoming 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, set for Sunday, October 27, 2024, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.
The Mombasa Satellite Run featured three race categories: a 5km Family Fun Run, a 10km race, and a 21km race, offering local running enthusiasts a chance to participate in Kenya’s largest single-day sporting event without needing to travel to Nairobi.
In the men’s 21km race, Bonface Kiprotich and Eric Shikuku secured second and third places, respectively, while in the women’s race, Tamnai Miriam took second place, followed by Molly Yanda in third. In the 10km race, Michael Bett claimed first place in the men’s category, with Martha Akendo emerging victorious in the women’s category.
The 5km and 10km participants started their race from Treasury Square, following a scenic route through the iconic Mama Ngina Waterfront, looping around the Docks Roundabout, before returning to the starting point. Meanwhile, the 21km runners extended their route across the Nyali Bridge, turning at Nyali Cinemax before heading back to Treasury Square.
The Mombasa race was the final satellite run in the series, following two other successful events in Kisumu and Kakamega, where Vincent Ouma and Gideon Kibet, a first-year student at Masinde Muliro University, took the top spots respectively.
The concept of satellite runs originated during the COVID-19 pandemic, when virtual marathons allowed participants to compete from different locations amid restrictions on public gatherings.
“The inclusion of satellite races demonstrates our dedication to providing accessible fitness and sporting opportunities across the country. Each year, we’ve seen the number of participants in Kisumu, Kakamega, and Mombasa increase, encouraging us to continue hosting these minievents,” said Peter Gitau, Standard Chartered COO and Chairman, Marathon Local Organising Committee.
The 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has secured support from over 40 sponsors, raising a total of KES 173 million. More than 25,000 runners have registered for this year's marathon, reflecting a 19% increase from the 21,000 participants in 2023.
Proceeds from the marathon will support Standard Chartered's Futuremakers initiative, which aims to empower young people, especially women and those with disabilities, by equipping them with the skills to learn, earn, and grow.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8, which advocates for inclusive economic growth and decent work for all. Since its inception, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has hosted over 300,000 runners, cementing its reputation as one of the region's premier sporting events. Kenya Tong-IL-Moo-Do Stars Among 142 Feted During Mashujaa Day
Three players From The Kenya Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation were among 142 individuals feted by President Willaim Ruto during the Mashujaa celebrations held in Kwale.
Those who were feted including some posthumous were grouped into 14 categories.
The three are Kenyan ladies team captain Salma Ali, Men’s Captain Master Elvis Malipe Ole Mpakuanik and Lona Abiero.
