Over 23,000 candidates sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education national exams in Mombasa have benefited from a free lunch program courtesy of Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir.

The program is sponsored by the Sharrif Nassir foundation and will see students from all the 380 public and private schools in Mombasa sitting for the exams receive the food packages.

The KCPE exams which began on Monday are expected to end on Wednesday.

Addressing the media at one of the pick-up center in Nyali constituency, the Mp said that he decided to expand the program to other sub-counties following requests from primary school heads.

The program has been going on in his Mvita constituency for the last 12 years.

“All students sitting for the KCPE exams will receive their lunch package regardless whether it is a public or private school, we want them to have the energy to tackle their afternoon papers,” said Nassir.

Nassir said that the food had been approved by nutritionists in the country as he vowed to offer a balanced diet to the candidates during the exams period.

He stated that the program was possible due to the close partnership and engagements with the ministry of education through out the 12 years in Mvita.

“I have been undertaking the KCPE lunch program even before I became the Mvita MP. This year we decided to expand it to cover the entire county after receiving several requests from school heads outside Mvita,”

The food package includes eggs, buns, a banana or apple, packet of milk, salt and water.

“We are providing the students with a balanced diet to ensure that they have the energy to tackle the afternoon papers, ,” said Nassir.

Nassir stated that no money from the Mvita NG-CDF office had been used to cover the cost of the program saying that it was all funded by his foundation.

“I want to categorically state that no public funds was used to sponsor the program, all the monies spent was from the Sharrif Nassir Foundation,” he said.

The foundation he said had partnered with Jomvu MP Badi Twalib to implement the program in Jomvu Constituency.

“We have also partnered with Hon Mishi in Likoni, Said Salim ‘Saedo’ in Nyali and Goshi Juma I Changamwe to ensure the success of this program,: he added.

Nassir added that talks were currently underway with the education ministry to provide lunch to secondary school candidates expected to sit for their national exams from next week.

“I know KCSE candidates have a single paper per day, but if parents allow it for their students to spend an extra hour or two after exams, then we might be able to offer them counseling and get them prepped up for the next days paper before leaving school,” he said.

Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamand Nassir has asked his political opponents to stop dragging his late father’s name Shariff Nassir into their campaigns for the sake of political mileage.

This is after Changamwe Member of Parliament Omar Mwinyi, asserted that the Mvita Mp had nothing to show politically, except riding on the influence of his late father  to stay afloat.

"Some people are now referring to themselves as Shariff Nassir, you are Abdulswamad Nassir and not Shariff Nasir. AStop riding on your father's name. Be proud of yourself, stand on your own" said Mwinyi.

But while addressing a gathering in Junda, Nassir maintained that his father's name is a household name and he has every right to use it for his own benefits and benefits of those who support his gubernatorial bid.

“There is nothing wrong with using or bragging about my late father’s name in my campaigns, because I am proud that I was born by him, if you see people talking about me it is because they have nothing to sell to people politically,” said Nassir.

Nassir is contesting for Mombasa governor seat through an Orange Democratic Movement ODM ticket but will first square it out with his bitter rival Suleiman Shahbal in the party primaries. The duo have embarked on extensive campaigns to woo Mombasa electorate support.

“If I keep on answering those who abuse me on political platforms, when will I get time to work for my people, We must agree that those throwing stones to us, we gather them and make a ladder that will make us grow,” said Nassir.

The two leaders have been hunting for votes in Nyali, Kisauni, Likoni and Mvita constituencies where they have been selling their agenda to the locals ahead of the 2022 polls. Nassir who was the father of the current Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, died November 27, 2005.

“They have now resorted to using my late father’s name, and I want to tell them that, my late father taught me not to be abusive, and I am sure that he has forgiven them for their deeds,” said Nassir.

Nassir said he will continue to seek electoral support as he seeks to get elected as the second governor for Mombasa County.

Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki, MPs Mboko (Likoni) and Badi Twalib (Jomvu)have already declared to support Nassirs bid stating that they have confidence in the ability of Nassir to succeed Joho.

“I can’t accept being zigzagged, so that I can lose focus on what I want to achieve, “said Nassir while addressing a political gathering at Junda on Saturday.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Mombasa had 508,223 voters during the 2017 General Election.

The numbers are bound to increase as IEBC plans to start recruitment of new voters ahead of the next general election.

The populous Kisauni constituency had the highest number of voters at 126,151, followed by Mvita (107,091) and Nyali (104,017), according to the 2017 IEBC register.

Likoni had 87,326, whereas Changamwe had 86,331 and Jomvu only 69,305.

Changamwe Member of Parliament Omar Mwinyi says he is not afraid to lose the ODM ticket for supporting business man Suleiman Shahbal to succeed governor Hassan Joho in the August 9 elections.

Mwinyi has become the latest strong critic of Mvita Member of parliament Abdulswamand Nassir, after officially endorsing business man Suleiman Shahbal for the top seat.

"So far have  I done alot of development for my people of Changamwe, so even if you deny me an ODM ticket, I have nothing to lose,"Mwinyi said, stating that he will not be intimidated for supporting Shahbal.

Mwinyi has poured cold water on Nassir’s ambition saying the two time Mvita Mp does not have what it takes to be the next Mombasa governor,o ver what he termed as leadership incompetence.

Mwinyi who seemed to be unhappy with how Mombasa has been led for the past years, asked residents not to make a mistake to elect a leader who has no interest of serving them

The two times Changamwe legislator, who appears to have launched a scathing attack on Nassir, says Mombasa deserves a visionary leader with leadership skills, to manage billions of county allocation funds.

"I know Shahbal is a man of integrity ,he doesn't want power because of Money, but this young men who want to put on expensive shoes ,watches, I doubt if they mean good for this county," said Mwinyi.

Mwinyi said Nassir has a character of a celebrity who is out to impress through 'very expensive' shoes and attire, at the expense of poor status of the electorates.

"I will go round this time ,to drum up support for Shahbal's candidature because I know he means good for this country," he added.

He was speaking at a meeting convened by Shahbal, where they rallied aspirants seeking political seats in Mombasa to drum up support for Shahbal's candidature.

Nassir and Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shahbal are among the top contenders seeking to succeed Governor Hassan Joho in 2022.

The duo is contesting through ODM party, but ODM is yet to unveil its preferred candidate. This is after the party announced that there will no be sacred cows in party nominations for Mombasa.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the creation of a peace and environment award dubbed “Amani and Mazingira Global Award” as part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The President said the bi-annual award, which will be sponsored by the Government and the people of Kenya, will be given to persons or institutions that champion environmental sustainability and peace.

“It will be accompanied by a monetary award of USD 20,000 and the first awardee will be announced on the 1st of June this year, which is our Madaraka or Republic Day,” the President said.

The Head of State spoke on Thursday at the UNEP headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi, when he presided over celebrations to mark the 50 anniversary of the global environment body.

Held under the theme "Strengthening UNEP for the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, the anniversary celebrations came a day after the conclusion of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5).

The President applauded UNEP for boldly championing the global environment conservation agenda since its establishment in 1972.

He said for over 50 years UNEP has galvanized collective action to protect the environment by progressively leading the world to understand the centrality of the environment in human existence.

“This journey has not been easy.  It has required UNEP to provide technical, diplomatic and political leadership in the development of the core concept of sustainable development; and more importantly, to build ownership of these concepts at the national level,” the President said.

The President pointed out that it has required UNEP to define and enforce rules and procedures for protecting the environment such as limiting emissions of gases or stopping endangered species from becoming extinct.

“Through its scientifically driven agenda, UNEP has established a credible platform for countries to come together and act boldly to advance the global environmental agenda,” he said.

He commended the leadership of the United Nations and the UNEP family for remaining steadfast and focused on implementing UNEP’s core mandate.

President Kenyatta also singled out former Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN, the late Amb. Jowi Odera, for playing an instrumental role in ensuring that UNEP finds a home in Nairobi.

“Equally worthy of recognition is the first UNEP Executive Director, the late Mr Maurice Strong. Mr Strong played a central leadership role in defining the character of the United Nations Environment Programme and in leading the Earth Summit, which is recognized as one of the most consequential UNEP conferences,” the President said.

The President also paid tribute to the late Prof Wangari Maathai for championing homegrown solutions to combat environmental degradation.

At the same time, President Kenyatta assured of Kenya’s  commitment to environmental sustainability, saying it is anchored in the country’s economic blueprint, the Kenya Vision 2030.

The President added that Kenya is proud to be the only UN headquarters in the global South, terming it an honour that the country appreciates and protects.

“Today, I am pleased to report that we will provide land for the development of humanitarian and logistics hubs in three locations in Kenya, namely Naivasha, Nairobi and Mombasa.

“We have further provided land for the creation of a diplomatic enclave adjacent to the United Nations Office at Nairobi complex,” President Kenyatta said.

To enhance efficiency in the administration of diplomatic privileges, the President said his Government has developed an integrated protocol management information system (IPMIS).

The system creates an automated one-stop-shop for tax exemptions, staff registration, issuance of diplomatic ID cards, registration and transfer of motor vehicles among other online services.

During the event, President Kenyatta invited the delegates to two key environment meetings – Stockholm +50 and the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon – which Kenya will co-host later this year with Sweden and Portugal respectively.

Speaking at the event, Presidents Mokgweetsi Masisi (Botswana) and Muhammadu Buhari (Nigeria) commended Kenya for providing exemplary leadership in environmental conservation and combating climate change.

Other speakers included Morocco’s Energy Transition and Sustainable Development minister Leila Benali who is also the incoming President of UNEA 6 and UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.

Mombasa governor aspirant Suleiman Shahbal says he will present a memorandum of understanding to the Orange Democratic Party ODM party leadership demanding clarity in the preparation for the party nominations in Mombasa.

Shahbal says he will draft a letter and mobilize ODM supporters to storm the Party offices demanding an explanation from the ODM party to explain how the party is prepared to hold nominations in Mombasa so as to avert any irregularities in the whole process.

The governor contestant raised fears that some candidates may be treated special during the process under the disguise of being too loyal to the party.

Shahbal is competing for the ODM party ticket to contest for Mombasa governor against Mvita Mp Abdulswamand Nassir and Mombasa deputy governor William Kingi.

“I want to prepare a memorandum, articulating point by point all the things that we want from ODM party nominations. We want free, fair and credible party nominations so that after nominations the party remains united,” said Shahbal.

Shahbal said the party had not done enough to assure aspirants of a fair nomination process noting that this might affect the strength of the ODM party in the county.

“Mombasa is divided between team project and team Shahbal. And team Shahbal stands for change, change must come in Mombasa, because we are tired,” he said

Adding “Under no circumstances, will we allow the nominations of Mombasa to be controlled or rigged by anyone,”

Shahbal also said that time is long gone, when some individuals would impose candidates on electorates in Mombasa.

The two times governor contestant said he is aware of a plot to implant some leaders he regarded as projects to be elected for political positions.

“There are some people here in Mombasa who have a tendency of choosing leaders for us, we have seen it all over from the governor seat, my friend in Mombasa that will be no more. I have been in the race and I witnessed it, but the 2013 Shahbal you knew is not the same as 2022,” he said.

He was speaking after meeting various ODM party aspirants at Wesley Hall in Mombasa on Thursday, where he urged the aspirants to do extensive campaigns for his candidature.
