Mombasa governor aspirant Suleiman Shahbal has challenged the orange democratic party (ODM) not to interfere with the party nomination process in the county.

According to Shahbal the party should let members from the county to decide on who will fly the party flag in the coming election.

Shahbal's camp has protested a plan to postpone nominations in Mombasa and wants party leader Raila  Odinga to intervene and reject the handpicking of leaders in the party nominations for Mombasa governor.

"Nobody is going to play games for us, the people of Mombasa will decide, this tendency of of handpicking leaders we will not accept," said Shahbal

Panic has gripped Shahbal camp after ODM said they had done a poll in February and March months and the polls were in favor of his gubernatorial opponent Mvita Mp Abdulswamand Nassir.

According to reports from Shahbal camp, ODM has initiated boardroom polls and the  latest poll showed that Shahbal had 26 percent and Nassir was 37 percent, while Hisham Mwidau a senatorial aspirant had 26 percent and 37 percent going to Mohamed Faki.

"We have seen a lot of activities from our party and we are not happy with the postponement of nominations, we don't want a situation where people will jump from our camp should we fail to get a nomination," said Old town MCA.

According to Hisham Mwidau,a senator aspirant who is backing businessman Suleiman Shahbal said they will not accept opinion polls instead it calls for ballot decision.

"We are questioning the credibility of the polls  because we feel that they did not follow the poll laws that demand, among other things,to reveal the identity of the pollster," said Mwidau.

According to Mwidau, the ODM party has argued that it will stick to the polls to determine who will Carry the nomination ticket for ODM party and the move has gripped various camps in the gubernatorial contest.

"You will be mis-informed you will be threatened, and the truth of the matter is nobody has been given a direct ticket, they are just spreading rumors so that you can start shifting to other camps," said Mwidau.

Shahbal camp has declared that it will go for nothing short of nomination process through ballot and has dared opponents to to bring it on.

I'm Best Bet For ODM Flag-Bearer - Nassir

Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Nassir has said he is the best candidate to fly the ODM party flag in the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

The race to pick the ODM flag bearer in the Mombasa gubernatorial race has been narrowed down to two, Nassir and businessman Suleiman Shahbal.

Nassir on Saturday held a meeting with 130 out of 163 MCA aspirants in Mombasa where he expressed his confidence in clinching the ODM party ticket to take over from outgoing Mombasa governor Hassan Ali Joho.

“Numbers don’t lie, of the 163 MCA aspirants who were confirmed to have paid the nomination fees, 130 are here with us today.  This is a sign of victory ahead for us,” said a jovial Nassir.

Adding " For you to be picked to be a flag bearer you have to meet certain qualifications and this applies worldwide not only in Kenya. First you must be loyal to the party, you must have been tested in leadership and be someone who can deliver to the people. I meet all these qualifications"

The legislature revealed intrigues of what had transpired in Nairobi since Wednesday after the ODM National Election Board called Mombasa aspirants for a meeting.

According to the MP, two opinion polls commissioned by the party had put him ahead.

His opponents he said protested the polls forcing the ODM NEB to commission a third opinion poll.

Following the standoff, the party postponed the planned nomination exercise slated for April 5 and 6. NEB chairperson Catherine Mumma issued a notice confirming the postponement.

Earlier on, there were confusing reports spreading on social media one saying that Nassir had been handed the party ticket with others saying that the ticket was handed to Shahbal.

“The two polls commissioned by the party have put me ahead. Our opponents disagreed and even doubted the party. A third poll is currently underway and I have no doubt, the results will be the same,” he said.

He further called on his main rival to respect the party and the decision that will be taken.

“During the NGC and the NDC held last month, the party resolved to use consensus, opinion polls or universal suffrage to get the right candidates to fly the party flag. I urge all of us to respect the party decision and direction,” he said.

Nassir further assured the aspirants that no one was going to be left out after the nominations promising to accommodate them in his government when he clinches the seat.

He also assured them that there were no preferred candidates for the ward positions saying that they will all be subjected to a free and fair nomination exercise.

Jomvu Member of Parliament Badi Twalib and his Likoni counterpart Mishi Mboko rooted for Nassir saying he was best fit to take over from governor Joho.

“I have worked with Nassir in parliament for the last nine years. He has proven to be a compassionate leader who has the interest of Mombasa people and the coast region at heart. Today I once again pledge my 100 percent support to you my brother,” said Twalib.

Mboko on her side called on their opponents to respect the party’s decision and directions.

“The ground has spoken, Nassir is the preferred ODM candidate. His track record speaks volume, he has sponsored several motions and bill in the national assembly advocating not only vor the region, but the country at large,” said Mboko.

The meeting was also attended by sole Mvita ODM Mp aspirant  Soud Machele, Goshi Juma (Changamwe) and Said Abdalla alias Saedo of Nyali who all pledged to rally behind Nassir.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has denied reports circulating on social media that it has issued a direct ticket to Mombasa governor aspirant Suleiman Shahbal.

According to the party, the claims posted in one of the online platforms, Daily Star Afriq stating that the party had issued a direct ticket to Shahbal is fake.

In a statement the party stated "NEB Chairperson Ms. Catherine Mumma has not addressed the media on anything to do with Mombasa County."

The reports indicated that Shahbal's main rival, Mvita Mp Abdulswamad Nassir has been refunded his nomination fees and persuaded to go for parliamentary seat.

The two, Nassir and Shahbal are banking on the party's support in their quests to succeed Hassan Joho as the next governor of Mombasa county.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed satisfaction that the Government’s investment in the modernization of training has equipped the country’s security forces with adequate skills to deal with the challenges of an ever-evolving security environment.

President Kenyatta said the Government has also undertaken far-reaching reforms to support the welfare of the security forces and facilitated them to effectively keep the country safe and secure.

"Public investments in the security sector have secured the modernization not only of the training of our security forces but have also ensured that our training is abreast with the challenges of an ever-evolving security environment.

“We have also undertaken far-reaching reforms to support your welfare and to facilitate you to best discharge the high burden of responsibility that has been bestowed upon you,” the President said.

President Kenyatta spoke on Thursday at the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet, Nakuru County, where he commissioned the first cohort of graduate general service officer cadets that has undergone a one-year professional training at the academy.

At the same time, the Head of State appreciated the leadership of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for their commitment to ensuring that the training provided to Kenyan troops adequately prepares them to operate effectively in both the contemporary and future security environments.

“I am pleased to note that the National Defence University-Kenya, a fully chartered university, is now fully up and running; and it is prepared to commence academic and professional development of the personnel across our entire security sector,” the President said.

He expressed hope that the cooperation in education and training will strengthen the cohesion of the country’s security organs and foster the multi-agency approach to operations that has proved very successful in addressing security matters.

In furtherance of the cooperation with other nations in fostering a more secure region, President Kenyatta commended the Kenya Military Academy for continuously training cadets from other countries.

“Today, I welcome the training of cadets from South Sudan as well as the commencement of an exchange programme of cadet training between the KDF and the defence forces of the Republic of Mozambique amongst many other existing cooperation arrangements.

“This is the true spirit of Pan Africanism where our training experiences enhance interoperability in multi-national engagements. Fundamentally, these partnerships will foster peaceful relations within our region and beyond,” President Kenyatta said.

Noting that the security threats the country faces cannot be defeated by military might alone, the President urged Kenyans from all walks of life to work together in securing the country by strengthening national unity and observing the values of tolerance and brotherhood.

“Moreover, the prosperity of a nation depends on how peace, security, governance and sound economic and financial policies are brought to bear for the advancement of its society. These values need to permeate all sectors of our society in equal measure,” President Kenyatta said.

The President congratulated the commissioned officer cadets for successfully completing the rigorous one-year training programme and advised them to strictly uphold the values and ethos that make the KDF a globally respected military.

Speaking during the occasion, the Kenya Military Academy Commandant Major-General Fatuma Ahmed said the institution provides value-based training with the aim of producing highly qualified military officers.

“Your Excellency, this academy being a centre of excellence, provides value-based training to ensure the officers commissioned are professionally, physically, intellectually, socially and morally oriented to military life,” said the Commandant.

The commissioning parade was attended by Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and senior military officers led by Chief of Defence Forces General Robert Kibochi as well as other senior Government officials.
