Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga eldest child Rosemary Odinga today celebrated her birthday at the Tamarind Hotel Mombasa in the company of her parents and local leaders.

Among the leaders who were present at the celebration was Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi,  Speaker Aharub Khatri, Senator Mohammed Faki, Changamwe Mp omar Mwinyi, Kilifi North Mp Pwen Baya, Homabay Woman Represenative Gladys Wanga.

Mombasa business man and Governor Hassan Joho's eder brother Abubakar Joho together with the Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Daniel Manduku.

Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has declared a ruthless operation to flash out drug peddlers in Mombasa and at the Coast region at large.

According to Matiang'i  drug peddlers are the cause of the rising cases of insecurity in the region.

Speaking in Mombasa after meeting political leaders, chiefs and security heads from the county, the cs said the government is going to commence a ruthless exercise to flash out all drug peddlers.

"We are commencing an unprecedented effort to deal with this issue of drug peddling. It is going to be a painful exercise, but we are prepared to start the journey," Matiang'i said.

Among those who attended the meeting was the Deputy Governor William Kingi, Senator Mohammed Faki, County Assembly speaker Aharub Khatri, Likoni Mp Mishi Mboko, Abdulswamad Nassir (Mvita), Mohammed Ali (Nyali) and some members of the county assmebly (MCAs).

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is tomorrow morning expected to meet all elected leaders from Mombasa county following the recent cases of insecurity in the county.

The meeting which will take place at the Governor's office comes just days after the dreaded wakali kwanza outlawed group unleashed terror on residents of Bamburi and Kisauni areas injuring more that 12 people.

Police have accused local politicians, drug cartels and land grabbers of being behind the attacks

It is still not yet clear if the Governor Hassan Joho will attend the meeting as he is still on  official leave.

A message from the Mombasa County assembly whip Charles Kitula to the MCAs on the meeting, seen by Ommy Dallah reads " Dear Hon You are kindly requested  to attend a meeting at Hon. Governor's office tomorrow at 9am the Chief guest will be Dr. Fred Okengo Matiang'i Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Security. Purpose to attend Regards, Whip 001".

President Uhuru Kenyatta has invited Barbadian investors to set shop in Kenya saying his administration has created an enabling environment for both foreign and local businesses to thrive.

President Kenyatta said the Kenyan government has put in place mechanisms such as protection of investment legislation and other instruments that facilitate an enabling business environment.

The Head of State added that Kenya is a signatory to a number of treaties in the region that make it a gateway not only to the East African market but also to the rest of Africa.

“Kenya is an entry point into the African market and if your businesses come to Kenya, they will get access to an African population of 1.2 billion,” President Kenyatta assured the Barbadian business community.

“Kenya is a member of the East African Community, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and has ratified the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA),” he added.

The President spoke in Bridgetown, Barbados during a business forum that brought together Kenyan and Barbadian investors to discuss business opportunities that exist in the two countries.

President Kenyatta said Kenya and Barbados may be thousands of miles apart but there are existing opportunities that can shorten that distance.

“Kenya is open for business. Kenya is ready for business. We want to partner with you and we believe that our partnership will be mutually beneficial,” President Kenyatta told the investors.

He pointed out that Kenya was ranked position 61 out of 190 countries by the World Bank Ease of Doing Business Report 2019.

“It is against this backdrop that Kenya is the preferred destination for investment in the Eastern and Central Africa region and therefore welcomes Barbadian investors,” the President said.

The Kenyan leader singled out the tourism sector, mobile money, renewable energy, blue economy and affordable housing as emerging areas that present lucrative opportunities for foreign investment.

“When it comes to fintech, we would want to see how we can partner to help you develop your product through mobile money platforms not just for Barbados but for the entire CARICOM region,” the President said.

The President advised Kenyan investors not to look at Barbados as a single country but an entry point into the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM) market.

“We should see this region as the new frontier, as the real true South partner that we can work together with and of whom we share a very similar outlook of the future,” he said.

President Kenyatta said the political will at the top could only be translated into prosperity for Kenya and Barbados if the private sector plays its role effectively as the true front runners of the process.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries should work to remove the obstacles that hinder trade between them by involving their respective private sectors.

“Traditionally, Barbadians do not invest in Africa in tourism. Traditional Africans do not invest in Caribbean in tourism. There is absolutely no reason for that not to happen,” she said.

The PM emphasized that private sector investment in the two countries should not be a preserve of big companies saying small and medium sized enterprises should also be given the platform to participate.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Tuesday evening launched celebrations to mark the International Decade of People of African Descent in Kingston Jamaica.

The launch of the celebrations to mark the United Nations designated period were unveiled as Jamaica observed its 57th independence anniversary.

The colourful ceremony was held at the Jamaica National Stadium and attended by thousands of enthusiastic Jamaicans who traveled from across the country to attend the historic event in Kingston, the country's capital city.

The highlight of the celebration was a presentation of songs and dances from the Americas which are what people of African descent remember of the traditions they came with to the Americas 400 years ago.

The presentations included nostalgic pieces from Cuba, Brazil, Haiti, New Orleans and Jamaica itself.

The presentations also included songs and dances paying homage to Africa with special mentions to Kenya whose President was the chief guest at the celebrations.

President Kenyatta, who was the chief guest at the event, said he was honoured to represent the African continent at the launch of the important celebrations.

“It gives me great pleasure to declare Jamaica’s commemorations to mark the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent officially open,” said President Kenyatta.

PM Holness said Jamaica will host several events over the next year until the 6th of August 2020 to celebrate the decade.

The launch of the celebrations coincides with the 400 year anniversary of the time ships carrying Africans first landed in the Americas.

It also coincides with the centenary of when Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey incorporated the Black Star Liner, ships which were to be used to repatriate Africans in the diaspora back to the continent.

Marcus Garvey’s teachings of African unity and independence had significant impact on the Pan African movements and also influenced the fight for independence.

Even though many Africans on the continent spend a lifetime without ever hearing of the history of black people in the Americas, there are millions of Africans in the diaspora who constantly search for their heritage and are very attached to Africa.

Among the places President Kenyatta has visited included the Jamaican Heroes Circle where he laid a wreath at the shrine of Garvey.

Prime Minister Holness said Jamaica will use the celebrations to mark the decade of people of African Descent to pay homage to Africa.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Kenyatta was the chief guest at the 67th Jamaica Agricultural Show at Denbigh.

President Kenyatta who toured the show ground was impressed by, among others, the variety of high grade cattle breeds developed by Jamaican scientists. The tropical cattle breeds include the Jamaican Hope, Jamaican Brahman, Jamaican Red and Jamaican Black. The cattle have the hardiness of the Zebu cattle and superior beef characteristics of the Aberdeen Angus.

President Kenyatta and PM Holness said that as part of the growing cooperation between the two developing countries, Kenya and Jamaica will work closely in exchange of expertise and technical knowhow in agriculture.

On Monday the two leaders held bilateral talks where they witnessed the signing of four deals to deepen ties between Kenya and Jamaica.

The agreements signed included MoUs on technical cooperation in tourism and also in the fields of sports, culture and heritage. The two leaders also witnessed the signing of a framework of cooperation between the two governments and an MoU on political consultations.

Besides the agreements that were signed, the two leaders and their delegations discussed plans to introduce air transport connections between Kenya and Jamaica.

Business was temporarily disrupted in the national assembly today morning after Kwale Women Representative Zulekha Hassan decided to walk in the chamber with her baby.

Temporary House Deputy Speaker Christopher Omulele had a hectic time controlling MPs in the House as some of the  Mps led by the majority leader Aden Duale criticisng the move by Zulekha.

The House was debating the Kenya-Somalia Maritime Border Dispute Resolution before Zulekha walked in with her baby. Majority Leader Aden Duale was forced to cut his submission, saying Zulekha was out of order.

“That member must be cited for gross misconduct. We must protect the dignity of the House,” said Duale

Omulele  ordered Zulekha out  advising MPs to use facilities the Parliamentary Service Commission had provided for lactating mothers.

Homa Bay town MP Peter Kaluma was among those who defended Zulekha's action  saying that she should not be separated with her new born baby.

Kaluma charged “If you are a Member of Parliament who is breastfeeding, in the best interest of that child, the child cannot be separated from you when you are in the course of your duty in the Assembly,” .

Women Mps walked out of the chamber in solidarity with their colleague threatening to also come with their children if a nursery is not set up in the parliament.
