Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] employees residing in the authority's pensions scheme houses in Mombasa are up in arms over what they term as  dilapidated state of some of the houses.

The residents mainly from the Dedan Kimathi estate opposite Pandya Memorial Hospital were in panic after part of a wall of one of the houses collapsed on Friday evening posing danger to Children who were busy playing around.

They said they have been faced with challenges after KPA handed over the units to the old pensions scheme.

Led by Moses Mutalii they argued that  the repair and maintenance work was being done without proper supervision.

Mutalii told journalists a lot of money has been spent but at the end there is shoddy work on the house units in the area.

"Over Sh 1.2 billion was spent on the repair of the units but the work was not done satisfactorily," he pointed out.

The resident lamented that all the houses are leaking and have cracks despite Sh 1.2 million being spent.

Mutali pointed an accusing finger at the pensions scheme and the  board of trustees for failing them.

He cautioned them if anything happens to the employees or their immediate families they will be held responsible.

"Let the government agencies responsible  for housing make an impromptu visit of the units to assess the condition themselves," he said.

On her part, another resident Matreda Mwakireti called on the Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Daniel Manduku to intervene and save the situation.

She argued that they have exhausted all the possible means in solving the problem.

"We now want the MD to intervene since we are tired of the situation " she said.

Truecaller today released the most comprehensive Truecaller Insights report to date. It aims to understand the impact of harassment calls & SMS for women in Kenya, India, Brazil, Egypt and Colombia.

The report revealed that 9 out of 10 women in Kenya receive harassment and nuisance calls and SMS.

The report combines quantitative research conducted by Ipsos in each local market, to get the statistics behind the problem, with face to face interviews with local women to give context and reality to the data.

These are the key findings from the report:

  • Looking at the data, sexual and inappropriate calls are common among women in Nairobi, where 1 out of 5 women receive this type of communication.

  • 47% of all the sexual harassment calls/SMS comes from inmates in Kenya, and 53% come from unknown people. The fact that the harassers are selecting women at random to harass is perplexing and irritating, especially in a country like Kenya where that level is high.

  • Despite it being common for women to receive sexual or inappropriate calls and SMS, there’s a concerningly low percentage of women who think these types of calls constitute harassment. Only 11% of all women who have received sexual harassment calls/SMS consider it as harassment.

  • Women in urban areas are being the most affected by sexual harassment calls/SMS. These are the top most affected areas:
  1. Nairobi
  2. Mombasa
  3. Kiambu
  4. Nakuru

  • The research reveals that harassment elicits strong reactions from women. Anger and irritation are the most common feelings towards sexual and inappropriate calls and SMS. Fear and worry are also common feelings that arise when women receive these types of calls.

  • Another shocking finding from this study is that only 2 out of 10 women in Kenya have taken action against harassment calls, and very few ever report this to the authority (6%.) For Kenyan women, with little support from authorities and local attitudes, harassment often has to be severe before women speak out.  Here are the most common actions against harassment calls:

○       49% blocked the number

○       40% ignored the calls/SMS

○       32% called their operator for help

○       29% told the harasser to stop

○       6% reported to authorities

 Research Methodology:

This research was conducted by Truecaller with support from Ipsos in India, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt and Kenya. Ipsos used a mobile-based approach for data collection and the same questionnaire was used across the region. In countries like Brazil, Colombia and Egypt the questionnaire was translated to the local language with minor localization tweaks.

The survey was conducted from the period November 22nd, 2019 to February 24th, 2020. The sample size varied from 1000 to 3324 women for each market among the age group 18-40, and women in socioeconomic classes A, B, C1 and C2.

Homabay county Woman Representative Gladys Wanga has said the move by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Gatundu South Mp Moses Kuria to walk out of the weekend BBI rally in Meru is juvenile and kiddish.

Speaking in Mombasa after meeting members of the Kochia welfare association, Wanga accused Murkomen and Kuria who are allies of Deputy President William Ruto of planning to disrupt the rally which was also attended by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Wanga also challenged Deputy President William Ruto to come out and explain to Kenyans his true position on the BBI.

On Saturday Murkomen denied claims that he intentionally walked out of the BBI meeting at Kinoru Stadium. He said that the reason he had to leave in a hurry was so that he could catch a lift offered by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.

It isn’t true that I stormed out of the Kinoru BBI meeting.Moses Kuria who gave me lift was leaving for another engagement.I had no choice but to follow.I also had parental duties in my children’s school.I apologize that wanachi followed us out of the stadium. We intended Not"he tweeted

Listening to "I Know Myself" album by US based Kenyan balladeer Josky Suda aka OchiChi.The.Artist rhymes out a musical masterclass that in no doubt rivals some of the best of legendary artists.

Throughout the album in a classical hip-hop charisma the artist in collaboration with a group of US based artists, addresses deep rooted issues cutting across his personal life and the general society.

OchiChi did not mince his words when Ommydalla.co.ke sought to understand what informed his assertive hardcore hiphop approach in the album.

He recalls that during his stay in Kenya he planned a string of collabos with some big artists who shortchanged him by hijacking the whole deal even though the track was originally his.

“The record blew up and I was left out of the plot. It was a heartbreaking situation but I picked myself up and decided to face the mic in studio and let out my frustrations. This is the raw truth and the A to Z of how this album was born,” the musician explains and further recalls how at one time found himself behind bars just because his family was opposed to his idea of pursuing music career.

“Actually I am more than determined to prove to the world that music is in my blood and is what I love. I want to eat, drink, dress and ride music,” he says.

He started music 15 years ago as a budding producer after being inspired by the grandpa who was a singer cum band musician.

OchiChi who has released three albums namely- MBK, Black and Real and I know Myself, believes he has what it takes to spiral his brand to greater heights beyond grandpa levels.

And as a sign of affirming his determination to glide up the industry ladder,  this week he unleashes new track “Whats The Deal.”

Ochichi.The.Artist has his own label “ChiengWay Music” where he has signed 6 other artists under him. He plans to release more music and to become a household name locally and internationally.
