Demystifying Sighting Of The Moon

Demystifying the SIGHTING OF THE MOON.---  cell phone --- 0722 - 483 058

A contribution by Major (Rtd)) Gharib Suleiman- Mombasa, Kenya.

Dear brothers. No need to fight. But again, little knowledge is dangerous. I will not decide anything for anybody. But I would wish to advance certain points based on facts, hoping the knowledge that will be derived will clarify our perspectives and direct each of us to make an informed choice. Iam not an 'ullama' but remain a good and conscious Muslim.

I am a graduate of METEREOLOGY amongst other 'majors' like OCEANOGRAPHY, ASTROLOGY and GEOGRAPHY from the prestigious Britannia Royal Navy College at Dartmouth in United Kingdom. Hence I feel I have a contribution to make on subject arguments.

I beg, however, that each of us keep our pre-conceived notions or ideas on matters sighting of the moon to one side and approach my arguments from a neutral point in order to derive maximum benefits.

Here we go. Basically TIME ZONES are determined by LONGITUDES. The straight lines linking the north pole to the south pole. So all the Countries and cities aligned in the same latitude would basically have the same time.

This is the case with large parts of Iraq, Saudi Aradia, Kenya, and down to South Africa. God has been kind to me as I have been to all the Countries mentioned above and I have experienced the same time.

The sun rises from the east and sets in the west. This introduces the concept of LATITUDES, those parallel lines running from east to west and round the Globe.

A section of muslims in Mombasa marking Eid-Ul- Fitr on Tuesday despite the directive by the Chief Kadhi Sheikh Ahmed Muhdhar that the holiday be marked on Wednesday

Kenya lies in the EQUITOR. Saudi Arabia lies further north, close to TROPIC OF CANCER- which is still a latitudinal line further north. We have the TROPIC OF CAPRICON further south towards Johannusberg area.

Then there is the Earths ROTATION along its axis once in every 24 hrs in an anti- clockwise direction impacting on both wind strengh and direction, and ocean currents. Rotation impacts on the moon due to magnetism factors (Moon's Gravity), impacting on the high and low tidal changes in the oceans of the world! Rotation determines why when it is evening in Kenya and Saudi Arabia, it is fajr on the same day in USA!

Furthermore, there is Earth's REVOLUTION around the Sun which takes about one year.

It has been shown that the Sun moves annually between the two tropics of Capricon and Cancer passing through the Equator twice as it heads down south and again as it moves north. This accounts for the four seasons (or two in some countries near Equitor)- summer, autumn, spring, winter! This explains why in the winter Saudia experiences maghrib as early as 5.15 pm while in Kenya at Equitor maghrib is 6.40 pm.

Likewise during summer, Saudia experiences maghrib as late as 7.30 pm while in  Kenya maghrib is 6.15 pm. In effect, Revolution of the  earth round the sun causes changes in the lengh of day or night in various parts of the earth during the year. It also accounts for the lunar eclipse.

When we refer to the Holy Quran, Allah educates us that THE MOON BORROWS ITS LIGHT FROM THE SUN. Allahu Akbar. Allahu Akbar. Mis-understanding of this concept has caused a lot of differences in the Muslim World regarding the sighting of the moon.

THE MOON HAS NO LIGHT OF ITS OWN but borrowed light. This has been proven only recently by scientists!

When the moon has to borrow its light from the Sun, and when the sun appears to "move" as it rises from the east through the equator and set in the west, then through earth's rotations, and revolutions, AND THE FACT THAT MOON'S LIGHT IS A BORROWED LIGHT FROM THE SUN, it would be naive for anybody to believe that the sighting of the moon can happen in all parts of the earth or world at the same time.

Because of differences in latitudes between Saudi Arabia and Kenya, and sun's movement between tropic of cancer which is nearer to Saudia and tropic of capricon through the equator where Kenya lies, this can account for the differences in moon sighting between the two countries, and yet they enjoy the same time zone!

So there you are brothers. It is an act of complacency to claim there is one moon in the whole world so it  should follow that once sighted in one area then it must imply the whole world has seen it!! To qualify the sighting of the moon in a particular area,  one must not take any one factor in isolation.

The whole range of qualifications must be taken into account- it is repeated by way of emphasis- latitudes, longitudes, equator, tropic of cancer, tropic of capricon, and the fact that moon's light is borrowed light from the sun, and a myriad of other factors such as rotation of the earth and its revolution around the sun.

ALL THE ULAMAS IN SAUDIA ARABIA and EGYPT and Others Concur with above assertions, and they have continuosly urged muslims to fast or break fast based on the SIGHTING OF THE MOON in their respective Countries.

During Prophet Muhammad's time a contingent of travellors approached the Prophet  on a day there were still fasting in the forenoon hours. The travellors then informed the Prophet that when they had started their journey the previous day, the moon had been sighted and eid was being celebrated there. The Prophet then ordered everybody to break the fast.

Logically, a day's walk by the travellors in those days (around 600 AD), through the thick and thin of the desert, would account for a distance of few kilometres, nothwithstanding deviations to all of the factors of latitude, longitudes, affects of rotations, and others, such considerations as leading to the breaking of the fast then to be absolute.

This is not an area that I intended to dwell upon but for God's sake let us not advance cheap discussions. The Chief Kadhi of Kenya is a government apointee. It is claimed he was not chosen by muslim ummah! Yet we are follow to follow the Saudi Authority which, I submit, is also appointed and not chosen or elected by the muslims there. Saudia is a Kingdom,  there  are hardly any elections there. Yet I choose  to be neutral.

Metereology is a complex subject, but I have tried to explain using a layman's language. I hope it will be of benefit to all of us. My explanations, your belief, your choices.!! "Hal yastawil ladhina yaalamuna walladhina maa laa yaalamuun".

Kama nimekosea mahali, natanguliza kuomba msamaha kwani mimi ni mwanadamu.

Afro-pop star Ashleye Scarlette is back with one of her most vulnerable releases to date,“Nikuamini”.

The song is a standalone single from the singer based on her personal experiences.

The new track, her first of 2019, is an impactful dance-tinged ballad that puts the emphasis on Ashleye Scarlett’s expressive vocal tone as she flits between airy breathiness and powerful, sweeping belts.

Lyrically, the song relays the artist’s sense of assurance and focuses on a relationship that might end in sorrow despite her putting her trust in it -- “Nifanye Nikuamini,” she sings -- and shares how the singer wanted to hold onto it even though she knows that it was something she needed to turn away from.

A deep Afro-pop track, “Nikuamini” is a tempo-shifting dance song that puts the focus on her synergy as a vocalist. It seamlessly flits between the breezy tones of the vocalist and her gruffer deliveries to create a vibrant soundscape soaring with shimmering synths and groovy beats.

The music video for the song bring even more focus on the theme as portrayed in the lyrics with the director capturing scenes of the singer having a conversation with the said lover then back solely onto the star, doing away with the flash and flare often associated with the world of pop and instead pans over the normal union of a couple in argument.

Delegates of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry [KNCCI] drawn from the coast region have endorsed Dr Erick Ruto for the national vice president position.

The move is a major boost for him as the campaign for the national chamber election scheduled for June 8 enters its home stretch.

The post has remained a two-horse race between Ruto and flamboyant businessman Gor Semelang’o a head of the June 8 annual general meeting in Nairobi.

KNCCI Tana River chapter chairman former Journalist Hassan Barisa led other delegates to rally behind Ruto’s candidature apart from

Delegates from  Mombasa County were the only ones missing at the meeting held at the Mombasa Club.

His rival Gor Semelang’o was also on a vote-hunting mission as he traversed the six coast counties .

Through acclamation Ruto was assured of the region’s votes in a well attended forum ahead of next month’s annual general meeting.

Speaking at the forum he refuted claims that he is not a bone fide member of the chamber maintaining he is a businessman and runs a hospital back in his Uasin Gishu County.

“I have served as secretary general of the hospital facility association during my tenure,” he pointed out.

The KNCCI candidate said he has connections with the government and he can enable the chambers to have access to government offices.

Ruto said he has a key that can help the chamber members access the national government for assistance.

“I have been helping a lot of youths  from my county secure jobs in countries like China each year, some of the members in my county are also beneficiaries” he said.

Adding “I will continue using my connections and networks to help our members nationally”

He said he is on a mission with them to discuss the challenges facing the members and to chart the way forward.

“I want to join leadership of the chamber due to the experience I have gained during my tenure as a medical practitioner he pointed out.

President Uhuru Kenyatta today presided over the launch of new generation currency notes for all denominations with an announcement that the old 1000 shillings banknote will be withdrawn by October 1.

The President presided over the rollout of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 shillings notes that have been issued in accordance with the 2010 Constitution.

Central Bank Governor Dr Patrick Njoroge who took the President through the profile of the new notes at Narok Stadium said the CBK was guided by the constitution in choosing the features and elements depicted on the banknotes as well as input from Kenyans through an elaborate public participation programme.

“The Central Bank of Kenya has now completed the process of producing the New Generation banknotes, in accordance with the Constitution and all applicable laws. I confirm that the New Generation banknotes were issued yesterday, May 31, 2019, by a Gazette Notice. They are now legal tender,” Dr Njoroge said.

The Governor announced that the old 1000 shillings banknote will be withdrawn by October 1 to deal with illicit financial activities including reported cases of currency counterfeiting.

“We have assessed the grave concern that our large banknotes—particularly the older one thousand shillings series—are being used for illicit financial flows in Kenya and also other countries in the region,” the Governor said.

He said the issues concerning the 1000 shillings note raised grave concerns that would jeopardize proper transactions and the conduct of commerce in Kenyan currency.

“By a Gazette Notice dated May 31, 2019, all persons have until October 1, 2019, to exchange those notes, after which the older one thousand shillings banknotes will cease to be legal tender. More details about this will be provided,” the Governor said.

All the other new banknotes except the 1000 will circulate alongside those previously issued but not withdrawn.

The launch of the new notes, witnessed by Deputy President Dr William Ruto, was conducted immediately after President Kenyatta read his speech to the Nation during celebrations to mark the 56th Madaraka Day.

“The launch of the New Generation banknotes at the Madaraka Day celebrations underscores that the history of the Central Bank is intertwined with the history of our country,” Dr Njoroge noted.

The new banknotes bear significant aspects of the Kenyan nation and will serve as a means of passing knowledge, conserving culture and promoting the country’s
global uniqueness, the CBK boss said.

All banknotes bear the image of Kenyatta International Conference Centre, one of the most iconic and recognisable landmarks in Kenya.

The banknotes also embody each of the big five; nyati, chui, kifaru, simba, and ndovu. Each banknote has a unique theme to showcase the richness of the people and nature in Kenya.

The fifty shillings notes showcase green energy, one hundred shillings (Agriculture), two hundred shillings (social services), five hundred shillings (tourism) and one thousand shillings has the governance theme.

“These are the drivers of a Newly Reborn and Prosperous Kenya,” said  Dr Njoroge

The new banknotes bear features that make them more accessible to the visually impaired members of the society.
