The fourth edition of the Pwani Innovation Week has been slated for October 2 to 6 at the Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa.

The organisers of the tech fair, Swahilipot Hub Foundation and Mombasa County Government alongside other partners announced that this year’s edition will happen at various destinations around the region with the heart of events being at the Swahilipot Hub Foundation.

Speaking during the media launch of the event, Swahilipot Hub founder Mahmoud Noor said that the tech fair aims to help create a widespread culture of innovation and stimulate the innovation ecosystem in the region.

This year’s edition has been themed ‘Sailing beyond borders; Empowering youth in the digital economy for a sustainable future’.

“This year’s edition will see the exchange of ideas on business enterprise solutions, interactive forum discussions on the Pwani’s economy, talks on education & skills development, exhibitions among other activities all aimed at ensuring youth in the Pwani region of East Africa are constantly connected to opportunities for economic growth,” said Noor. 

Noor said that Swahilipot Hub Foundation and Mombasa County Government are dedicated to supporting the youth in overcoming challenges and thriving in the Ecosystem.

He said that through strategic partnerships with communities, government entities, public/private sectors, development partners and the academia, they can leverage the strengths and diversity of individuals from all backgrounds to empower young people and enhance their quality of life.

He added that with a strong commitment to inclusivity, cooperation, self-reliance, and respect for diversity, it allows young individuals to take charge of their journey, while making long-term investments, forging partnerships, and fostering a vibrant culture of youth engagement in all aspects of development.

“The societies of the present and future depend on an empowered youth to imagine these into being. Youth must also be provided with the right ecosystem for this imagination to thrive and rise to contend with factors like climate change, high levels of unemployment, poverty, and conflicts that threaten this future,” Noor said.

The objectives of the innovation week he said includes showcasing the East Africa's Pwani region innovation potential, enhancing driving economic growth, fostering collaboration, and addressing regional challenges.

Other objectives he said include encouraging local participation through empowerment, including the creation of a vibrant innovation ecosystem and the retention of local talent in the region, and to also attract investment through its unique industries and rich biodiversity and promote the East Africa's coastal region visibility.

The Swahilipot Hub Foundation head of communications Suhayl Hamid said that one of the foreseen outcome of the tech week is the establishment of partnerships between startups, investors, academia and government agencies.

This he said will result in increased job creation, investment opportunities, and overall economic development.

“We foresee empowerment and ownership among the local participants, ultimately contributing to the long-term growth and sustainability of Innovations, startups of the Pwani Region of East Africa,” said Hamid.

He added that they hope to champion and achieve policy recommendations to further develop the economy of the East African coastal region and also hope to launch of partner initiatives to enhance the development of innovative ideas and capabilities.

“Through the realization of these objectives, the Pwani Innovation Week, facilitates economic prosperity, social empowerment, and positions the Pwani region of East Africa as a hub for innovation and progress on both regional and international platforms which contributes to the long-term development and sustainability,” Hamid said.

The week-long event will entail a number of activities including innovation challenge and hackathons, training bootcamps and workshops, keynote speeches and panel discussions, women in Tech, Ubunifu zone (Exhibition) and cultural identity and digital spaces.

Good news to Genge and Bongo Fleva artists and music lovers as the Recording Academy has added three new categories for the 66th Annual Grammy Awards set for next February 

In addition, the existing categories of producer of the year, non-classical and songwriter of the year, non-classical will be moved to the general field. The general field has long consisted of four categories which have also been reffered as the Big four, they are. album, record, song of the year and best new artist. 

“The Recording Academy is proud to announce these latest category changes to our awards process,” Harvey Marson.

Adding "“These changes reflect our commitment to actively listen and respond to the feedback from our music community, accurately represent a diverse range of relevant musical genres, and stay aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape."

According to reports, these category additions and amendments were passed at the Recording Academy’s most recent semiannual board of trustees meeting held last month.

The three new categories include:

Best African Music Performance
A track and singles category that recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent. Highlighting regional melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical traditions, the category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.

Best Pop Dance Recording
Recognizes tracks and singles that feature up-tempo, danceable music that follows a pop arrangement. Eligible Pop Dance recordings also feature strong rhythmic beats and significant electronic-based instruments with an emphasis on the vocal performance, melody and hooks. Dance remixes are eligible in the Best Remixed Recording Category only and may not be entered in Best Pop Dance Recording.

Best Alternative Jazz Album
This category recognizes artistic excellence in Alternative Jazz albums by individuals, duos and groups/ensembles, with or without vocals. Alternative Jazz may be defined as a genre-blending, envelope-pushing hybrid that mixes jazz (improvisation, interaction, harmony, rhythm, arrangements, composition, and style) with other genres, including R&B, Hip-Hop, Classical, Contemporary Improvisation, Experimental, Pop, Rap, Electronic/Dance music, and/or Spoken Word. It may also include the contemporary production techniques/instrumentation associated with other genres.

 

 

Emirates and Kenya Airways (KQ) have announced an interline partnership that will allow customers of both airlines access to new destinations on the two airlines’ networks within a single itinerary.

The agreement will provide customers with increased travel options as well as seamless baggage check-in to their final destination.

Emirates customers will now be able to fly to 28 destinations on the Kenya Airways network using Nairobi as the gateway to destinations such as Nampula, Bangui, Bujumbara, Kigali, Dzaoudzi, Lubumbashi, Kinshasa, Kilimanjaro, Juba, Zanzibar, among many other regional points across Africa.

Additionally, as part of a bilateral interline arrangement, Emirates passengers travelling via Dubai can also book a single ticket itinerary from or to Mombasa, one of the most popular leisure destinations in Kenya.

Similarly, Kenya Airways passengers travelling from Nairobi and Mombasa will now be able to access the Emirates’ network and seamlessly connect through Dubai to 23 destinations across West and South Asia, the Far East, the Indian Ocean and Middle East such as Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok, Ahmedabad, Beirut, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Seoul among others.

Adnan Kazim, Chief Commercial Officer, Emirates said, “We are pleased to ink our first partnership with Kenya’s flag carrier. Kenya is a strategic gateway in our Africa network, and this new interline agreement will enhance connectivity for Emirates’ customers and provide them more travel choices across the continent.”

Adding” We look forward to deepening our relationship with Kenya Airways, offering greater network opportunities and improving connections for both of our customers.”

Speaking on the agreement Julius Thairu, Chief Commercial and Customer Officer Kenya Airways said, “This partnership will provide the ideal gateway for our customers as we seek to increase our connectivity between Africa and the Middle East through Emirates’ hub in Dubai.”

Adding” Partnerships like these are key in aviation as they take advantage of mutual scale and efficiencies to provide customers with more seamless travel options”

Tickets are available to purchase on emirates.com, online travel agents (OTAs) as well as through major travel agencies.

Emirates began operations to Kenya with the launch of flights between Nairobi and Dubai in 1995, and since then it has steadily grown the route to 14 weekly flights, having flown over 5 million passengers through the years.

Emirates is also the only airline serving Kenya with private, enclosed First Class cabins, offering premium customers a superior experience across every touchpoint of their journey.

Kenya Airways recently launched direct flights between Mombasa and Dubai offering customers 4 weekly flights.

The flight from Moi International Airport, Mombasa marked the second hub, other than its Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, that the carrier connects passengers directly to the UAE.

KQ currently operates ten weekly flights to Dubai from Nairobi using a mix of B737-800 and the Dreamliner B787-800.

EALA Mp and former Mombasa senator Hassan Omar has called on ODM MPs in Mombasa to vote for the controversial Finance Bill 2023.

Omar said that the bill as proposed by the president William Ruto-led  Kenya Kwanza government aims at pushing for social justice and reducing the gap between the poor and the rich.

The UDA national vice chairperson was speaking in Mombasa Saturday afternoon after launching and empowering The Amplified Youth, a socio-economic empowerment organisation by the Mombasa County UDA Party Youth Group.

"I call upon the ODM MPs to join us pass the bill because it is going to create jobs for our people especially our women and youth. The proposes 3 per cent housing fund is in line with our constitution to deliver affordable housing as a right," said Omar.

Omar said that the bill sets the foundation for Universal Health Care so that Kenyans can access quality affordable healthcare.

This he said is part of social justice that the government is pushing for in the country.

"We need social justice in the country so that we can make those who are worse off better off, before making those who are better off well off," Omar said.

He asked the president to soldier on and not be distracted by those opposing the bill telling him to focus on delivering his agenda to Kenyans.

The UDA government he said will strive to empower Kenyans adding that they were very much on course to lead economic revolution needed in the country.

Omar once again called on Mombasa ODM MPs to work with the government and push for development projects.

He said that the the government was ready and willing to work with all leaders on matters development irregardless of their political affiliation.

He said the time for politicking is over and leaders need to put aside their political differences and work for the people saying sometimes leaders need to stoop in order to conquer.

"I have been talking to our Mps imploring to them on the need to work together, we are even ready to work with governor Nassir for the sake of our people"

"Mombasa has been for far too long in opposition, we also need to be shareholders in government," he said.

Nominated senator Miraj Abdillahi took a swipe at the opposition asking them to stop their double standard on the Finance bill especially the debate on the housing levy.

"The opposition cannot be hell-bent in opposing the bill and then when they come to parliament they start complaining about poor living conditions for the police. The housing levy will ensure we build affordable houses," said Miraj.

Miraj asked the opposition to respect the president and give him time to deliver on his promises he made to Kenyans during campaigns.

She further urged Kenyans to support the government saying that those opposed to the housing levy were not bringing any alterntive to the table.

"Stop inciting the youth against the government. You are lying that the money will be looted, but I am telling you that this government is keen on ending corruption," Miraj said.

Miraj also asked her colleagues from Mombasa to declare their stand on the Finance Bill debate warning them to stop with the threats that they will vote against it.

She reiterated that not even a single penny will be misappropriated.

"Stop with your threats that you will block the bill, we have numbers in parliament and we will pass the bill," she said.

 

Mombasa county plans to construct telecommunications ducts within the Central Business District.

The utility ducts will enable installation of cables without having to dig up roads within the CBD.

According to Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir,  the ducts which will be shared by all providers.

"We will soon introduce a new by law, the dig once, dig smart act. As a county either on our own or with partnership we will install the internet ducts in all our roads . If a company wants to install internet or fibre they will now just plug in their cables in the ducts, no one will have to go through the hustles of digging our roads" said Nassir.

Adding " They (companies) now will be only required to obtain authorization after making necessary payments, to lay their cables in the utility ducts. They will only pay the wayleave and rental".

Addressing the media in his office, Nassir said this is among the plans that the county is intending to roll out to ensure there is order and attract investors.

Nassir noted "We want to ensure that our county remains beautiful and there is order. We are ready to work together with any individual or company that wants to beautify our county"
