The 15th anniversary celebrations of the annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) will be held in Mombasa County, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the County Government.

The event, held Tuesday at the Governor's office in Mombasa will not only see the County host the gala but also partner with SOYA in initiatives that will promote nurturing the uptake of sports disciplines such as water sports and beach games as Kenya looks to increase its portfolio and build a competitive edge in the sporting arena.

Speaking at the ceremony, SOYA Founder, Dr. Paul Tergat noted that the potential of the SOYA event growing to become a phenomenon in the East African region and beyond is huge and needs to be supported.

"We are very excited that SOYA has grown in leaps and bounds over the years. We owe this to our dear partners led by our title sponsor safaricom who have believed in our mission and continuously support this initiative. More so, today we are happy to partner with Mombasa County in this novel idea to host the SOYA awards outside Nairobi County," he said.

He also noted the importance of having the celebrations across the county as a way of promoting the country through sports tourism.

"Most of our sportsmen and women have traveled far and wide across continents world over. However, they also need to equally visit the other parts of their country. I, therefore, believe we need to partner with counties to host this event across the country as a way to showcase the treasures we have and promote sports tourism in Kenya using our brand ambassadors," he went on to say.

On his part, an elated H.E. Governor Ali Hassan Joho said that hosting SOYA@15, a premier initiative outside Nairobi was an honor and great privilege.

"We are honored to partner with you in an initiative that not only promotes sports but pays tribute to our sports personalities who ably fly our flag high be it locally, nationally or internationally," he noted.

He noted the importance of a partnership such as this as it will motivate the upcoming sportspersons from the county and beyond to nurture and grow their talent as they venture into various novel sports activities for leisure and as a career as well.

"We the people of Mombasa County welcome SOYA here and we are looking forward to hosting a great event and welcome the people who have traditionally attended the event to visit Mombasa for the event. We will provide the necessary support to ensure we grow the number of sports persons, enthusiasts, participants and fans in various unique sports activities that we have to offer," he said.

Present to witness were representatives from the event’s title sponsors, Safaricom PLC led by the leading mobile telephony Company’s Head of Department, Coast region, Mr. James Maitai.

“As a brand, Safaricom is extremely proud of the growth we have seen since the inaugural SOYA Awards. We have been a part of SOYA's birth, growth and development from the start. We are very excited that this noble initiative that Paul Tergat started 15 years ago is now moving from its traditional home in Nairobi. We are looking forward to a great partnership during the awards here in Mombasa in the January 2019,” said Mr. Maitai.

The event is scheduled for January 2018

Low cost carrier, Silverstone Air has launched its new morning flights from Mombasa to Nairobi.

This brings the total number of destinations served by the airline to 8 within Kenya including the pioneer Kisumu to Mombasa direct flights.

The early morning flight will be departing Mombasa at 0630hrs to arrive at Wilson Airport Nairobi at 0740hrs.

The new move by the airline was welcomed by different stakeholders including Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho who was the chief guest at the launch. Joho encouraged other investors to also consider investing in the Mombasa market arguing this will be a big boost to the tourism industry.

"Such investments need to be encouraged and as the county Government we will make sure that we fully support these investments " said the Governor.

"One of the main reason that has also made me attend this launch is the fact that you have complied with our directive of the white and blue colour" joked Joho.

On his part the Chairman of the Kenya Tourism Federation Mohammed Hersi challenged the airline to also consider flying in other countries like Juba.

The Mombasa debut flights coincides with two key global meetings that are set to be held in Mombasa, the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) and the World Skal Congress.

Ahead of the launch, Redsan says, “I am bringing my long term friend Demarco who I have also collaborated with in the album as the event’s main feature. I have also worked with Khaligraph before and we happen to share a similar vision.

His dream to take Kenyan music to the world is the same as mine from 24 years ago when I started my career,” adding on reigning Nigerian Pop Queen: “Tiwa Savage was an easy choice for me because she is one of the ladies I really admire in the Afro Beats scene and plans to work with her are already underway.”

Redsan is among the pioneering Kenyan music acts whose music has dominated the industry for more than two decades commanding massive crowds and connecting with diverse audiences. At the launch event, he will be performing some of his greatest hits of all time as well as new tracks from the new album.

THE BADDEST ALBUM—Redsan’s fifth will have 17 tracks including collaborations with Jamaican acts Demarco and Naila (formely of Brick & Lace), Kenyan songstress Yvonne Darc, Tanzanian fast rising artist Ervix and Ugandan heavy weight Jose Chameleone.

Mövenpick Hotel & Residences Nairobi has embarked on a  campaign to support local initiatives through its ‘Kilo of Kindness’ global charity campaign.

Launched by Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts in 2015, the highly successful initiative, which honours the United Nations International Day of Charity on 5 September, calls on guests to donate at least one kilo of food, clothing and educational supplies to disadvantaged communities around the world, with a focus on underprivileged youngsters.

This year more than 30 hotels across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East are backing the campaign, which runs from 1-15 September.

Guests and visitors are invited to drop off at least one kilo of supplies at the hotel lobby during that period, which will then be distributed to Angels of Hope, a community-based organisation in Kenya’s slums of Kibera started in 2010 to support poor orphans and vulnerable children living with HIV/AIDS. Angels of Hope aims to achieve community development as well as eliminate hunger, homelessness and illiteracy.

Last year, 8,500 kilos of supplies were donated by guests of participating hotels – a figure Mövenpick hopes to surpass with its 2018 campaign. While each guest is encouraged to donate at least one ‘Kilo of Kindness’, all contributions will be gratefully received.

High-priority items include books, notebooks and stationery such as pens, pencils, rulers and erasers; canned food, soup, fruit, vegetables and concentrated milk; dry food like rice, beans, oats, pasta, cereals, flour, powdered milk, baby formula, tea and coffee; and clothing for adults and children.
