Social activist and radio personality Adelle Onyango has launched an initiative that will equip the youth and prepare them for the job market.

Together with an online talent management platform, Fuzu, Adelle has unveiled a job apprenticeship initiative that will take successful applicants through a two-week shadowing process with executives in over 30 companies.

“It’s about giving young people a one on one opportunity and access to insight from different professionals in a variety of industries and organizations.

“Our education system is largely theoretical and as a result a majority of people get to know what their jobs entail and require practically, once they are already in the job, this initiative with Fuzu and its partners seeks to provide insight for the youth so that they may be able to have some understanding of what their dream careers entail and require from a practical perspective.”

“It could be the head of an organization or business. It is an opportunity for the young people to get practical experience and learn outside of the lecture theatres. We are trying to provide young people with an opportunity to understand better the industries they are interested in; one could apply for a position in what they want to do, what they studied or what they are passionate about,” Adelle explained.

The job shadowing is free for TeamADELLE members and anyone else interested; they can get the application forms from Adelle’s social media platforms (Facebook: Adelle Onyango, Twitter: @AdelleOnyango, Instagram: Adelle Onyango).

“The apprenticeship will be spread across ten days and will be carried out in a variety of companies. Each apprenticeship will be different and tailored to suit the needs and requirements of the business/organization and the apprentice,” Adelle said.

Apllicants can apply starting September 10th to 16th.

Adelle mused, “We have employers complaining about young people, saying that they don’t know how to conduct themselves during interviews and that their CVs’ are not well done. I thought where should they get this information? There is no emphasis placed on it in our education system? Our initiative is trying to help fix this and prepare young people for the job market.”

She continued: “This is the first step that we want to take together with, Fuzu who are experts in the job market and their partners…”

Arnold Muoki, Head of Human Resource, Turnkey Africa, one of the companies that have graciously accepted to be part of the job shadowing initiative said: “Knowledge is a combination of a strong theoretical background and work experience creates a market-ready talent. The turnaround time of our graduates into being effective talent pieces in the world of work has a direct impact on the pace at which our economy grows which affects our quality of life.”

Echoing him is Chandni Shah, the Business Growth Specialist at Express Automation, who added, “They need to understand how corporate works, they need to find their ground and understand where they can fit in instead of settling for any job. Job satisfaction is key for today’s generation. It’s always a pleasure to show someone the way, mentor them for a short while and handhold them through the first days of corporate world.”

The 15th anniversary celebrations of the annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) will be held in Mombasa County, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the County Government.

The event, held Tuesday at the Governor's office in Mombasa will not only see the County host the gala but also partner with SOYA in initiatives that will promote nurturing the uptake of sports disciplines such as water sports and beach games as Kenya looks to increase its portfolio and build a competitive edge in the sporting arena.

Speaking at the ceremony, SOYA Founder, Dr. Paul Tergat noted that the potential of the SOYA event growing to become a phenomenon in the East African region and beyond is huge and needs to be supported.

"We are very excited that SOYA has grown in leaps and bounds over the years. We owe this to our dear partners led by our title sponsor safaricom who have believed in our mission and continuously support this initiative. More so, today we are happy to partner with Mombasa County in this novel idea to host the SOYA awards outside Nairobi County," he said.

He also noted the importance of having the celebrations across the county as a way of promoting the country through sports tourism.

"Most of our sportsmen and women have traveled far and wide across continents world over. However, they also need to equally visit the other parts of their country. I, therefore, believe we need to partner with counties to host this event across the country as a way to showcase the treasures we have and promote sports tourism in Kenya using our brand ambassadors," he went on to say.

On his part, an elated H.E. Governor Ali Hassan Joho said that hosting SOYA@15, a premier initiative outside Nairobi was an honor and great privilege.

"We are honored to partner with you in an initiative that not only promotes sports but pays tribute to our sports personalities who ably fly our flag high be it locally, nationally or internationally," he noted.

He noted the importance of a partnership such as this as it will motivate the upcoming sportspersons from the county and beyond to nurture and grow their talent as they venture into various novel sports activities for leisure and as a career as well.

"We the people of Mombasa County welcome SOYA here and we are looking forward to hosting a great event and welcome the people who have traditionally attended the event to visit Mombasa for the event. We will provide the necessary support to ensure we grow the number of sports persons, enthusiasts, participants and fans in various unique sports activities that we have to offer," he said.

Present to witness were representatives from the event’s title sponsors, Safaricom PLC led by the leading mobile telephony Company’s Head of Department, Coast region, Mr. James Maitai.

“As a brand, Safaricom is extremely proud of the growth we have seen since the inaugural SOYA Awards. We have been a part of SOYA's birth, growth and development from the start. We are very excited that this noble initiative that Paul Tergat started 15 years ago is now moving from its traditional home in Nairobi. We are looking forward to a great partnership during the awards here in Mombasa in the January 2019,” said Mr. Maitai.

The event is scheduled for January 2018
