The removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as ODM Secretary General has drawn sharp criticism from youth leaders, who say it highlights the party’s reluctance to embrace divergent views and young leadership.
Evans Momanyi, Chairman of the Capital Caucus Youth Group, said the decision sets a worrying precedent for young politicians aspiring to top positions.
“The removal of Edwin Sifuna shows that ODM’s current leaders do not welcome differing opinions,” Momanyi said.
Adding “Political parties must practice the democracy they preach, and that includes giving young leaders a fair chance to lead.”
Momanyi urged political parties across the country to open space for youth participation in decision-making processes.
“Youthful leaders should be given the opportunity to occupy top leadership roles. It is time for the youth to also lead,” he said.
The comments come amid nationwide calls for generational renewal in political leadership, as young leaders continue to push for greater representation within Kenya’s major parties.
