Social activist Adelle Onyango together with co-author  Lanji J.J. Ouko hosted a preview brunch for their upcoming book.

It documents the voices of survivors of rape, observers, family members, activists, nurses, lawyers and many others, who offer a glimpse of the different perceptions of violence.

Lanji explained, “The book is like none this continent has ever seen as it documents stories of survivors of sexual violence from 1902 till the present times. We are sure that the book will not just amplify the stories but show the work needed to support survivors, ensure justice and ultimately end sexual violence."

Adelle who also co-authors the book, said, “When the book comes out in 2021, we implore Africans to get it, read it, listen to the survivors’ voices and then introspect on if you are helping end or aggravate sexual violence.”

The Sunday brunch was at Kileleshwa Gardens where they previewed the book to people who have contributed to the journey of making the book.

Here, Janet Mbugua who was among the guests also added her voice to the book.

Adelle explains, “Janet Mbugua has been vocal about issues affecting vulnerable communities. Her work in the ending period poverty is exemplary. We picked her because of her genuine fight to make spaces safer for women and as you know, all these issues facing women are interlinked.”

Mbugua is also someone who has directly supported Adelle Onyango in her fight to end gender-based violence. "It is powerful to have women supporting each other especially when it’s for the greater good of other women not only in Kenya but on the continent.”

"This is a powerful book that amplifies stories by survivors of sexual violence. It will force us to confront this issue and demand that we do more to end sexual violence. It may also help other survivors start their healing journey," Mbugua noted.

Kisauni Mp Ali Mbogo has vowed to help residents of Kishada in a land tussle between the community and a family over the ownership of the Kishada playing ground.

The family wants back the ground claiming it's ownership while the community claim the ground is a community ground as it is under the Wakf commission.

The family has since gone to court to sue locals including a coach of the local football team Kishada FC Athman Shee.

Mbogo who visited the ground on Monday evening vowed to support the community.

"Some of us grew here, we played on this ground since we were young so for someone to now come out and claim ownership of the ground is unacceptable" said Mbogo.

Adding "This ground is currently under Wakf commission  and I was at their offices today morning, they promised to get back to me with the right answer concerning it's ownership which we will also use in our defence in court".

Mbogo who was accompanied by former area Mp Annaia Mwaboza who is also part of the legal team called on the community especially the local football team to continue using the ground since there is no court order to stop them from using it.

Mbogo argued "Do not be afraid or feel intimated now that they have gone to court. The law protects us all, so continue using the ground as we gather our evidence for our defence team which will face them in court".

"The lawyer told me we need kshs 300,000 for this but we can just give him kshs 100,000 for a start and today I have come with the money (kshs 100,000) and i will hand it over to the lawyer to start his work" he added.

On his part Annania Mwaboza also vowed to support the locals in the tussle.

"I also played on this ground during my days, so this case is personal and as a former Mp and lawyer I will work closely with the defense team to win this war" said Mwaboza.

KPA Golf Tournament Kicks Off

The annual Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) golf open tournament got underway at the Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa county.

A total of 200 golfers took part during the one day event in Nyali constituency and by time of going to press the awarding ceremony was taking place.

The tournament, which was played under the health ministry’s guidelines to curb the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic, attracted golfers from all over the country.

Veteran golfer from KPA Yobesh Oyaro was the first golfer to tee off at the event.

He told journalists the tournament is a forum and an opportunity for sponsors to meet and interact with the stakeholders annually before the year ends.

“In a competition a participant must have the ambition to win to make the championship lively and entertaining,” he pointed out.

The KPA officer said he is happy with the course and the favorable weather which was good to the participants of the event.

Oyaro has urged youths and upcoming golfers to take the sport seriously since it is good to venture into.

He defended the sport saying it is a good physical exercise and it is more entertaining and social and interactive.

“Let youths work hard and join the sport which has a bright future which they should invest in,” he said.

On his part Nyali Golf and Country Club captain Aareem Dhanji told journalists the pandemic has put sports activities into a different tune in the country’s history.

He added that it is mandatory for all players to wear face masks within the club premises and must maintain social distance to contain the spread of the second wave of virus outbreak saying the KPA tournament is the first to be held this year due to the outbreak of the infection.

“This is my first time to host the KPA tournament since I was elected despite the challenges the country is facing following the outbreak of the virus,” he pointed out.

Persons living with disability in the coast region have vowed not to support the proposals in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) document.

Coast Association for Persons with Disability (CPWD) Chief Executive Officer Hamisa Maalim Zaja said the initiative which is meant to amend the 2010 constitution has neglected persons living with disabilities.

She pointed out that to make matters worse the proposals in the document have treated them as second class citizens unlike in the 2010 constitution.

“The initiative which is at the stage of collection of signatures for a referendum is meant to blindfold taxpayers not to focus on the massive corruption at the health ministry,” she added.

Zaja challenged the government to explain how massive corruption rocked the ministry at the expense of measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

She spoke when she distributed wheelchairs and assorted foodstuff to persons living with disability at a ceremony held at Kinodo social hall in Msambweni constituency, Kwale county.

The CPWD Chief Executive Officer said they have resolved to campaign against the document.

Zaja who was accompanied by United Green Movement [UDM] candidate for the Msambweni parliamentary by election Khamis Mwakaonje said she will rally persons living with disability to reject the document in totality.

She cautioned the era of being used by the political class to ascend to leadership is gone arguing the document is not good for persons living with disabilities in the country.

“The document is being driven by leaders with personal agenda and we are ready to roll up our sleeves to oppose it,” she insisted.

Over the past year, there has been a clear appetite for fresh African content to star on global streaming platforms. Netflix has recently enjoyed much success with its first two African original series: Queen Sono and Blood & Water.

Realness Institute today announced its partnership with global streaming service Netflix to create an Episodic Content Development Lab for writers in Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

The Writer’s Lab submission will go live at the end of November on realness.institute/episodic-lab and will be open to writers from Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria with Film and TV experience in any genre (fictional or factual) or language.

This partnership will result in 6 writers selected to work on projects that will be developed and commissioned by Netflix.

The selected writers will be paid a stipend of 2000 USD per month to participate and will be expected to be available full time for a period of 3 months, from June to September 2021.

Kenya’s Dorothy Ghettuba is Netflix’s lead for African Original Series. She says of the partnership, “At Netflix, we believe that great stories come from anywhere and can be loved everywhere. We strongly believe that Africa has a wealth of untold stories.”

Adding, “As we grow our slate of Originals in Africa, partnerships with organizations like Realness will help us achieve our goal of investing in writers who will bring diverse genres of authentic, local stories that cater for every mood and will ensure our members see their lives reflected on screen.”

Co-founder and Creative Director of Realness Institute, Elias Ribeiro, added, “We had fun shaping the program with the Netflix team. We all share a love for storytelling and Netflix’s writer-centric approach is very much in line with our ethos.”

Since the 2015 inception of Realness Institute, a non-profit organization committed to fostering a new wave of African storytelling, they have delivered 5 editions of its Screenwriters’ Residency and recently the first Creative Producer Indaba as a Development Executive Traineeship.

Realness Institute will be expanding their offering in 2021 to the episodic content space.

This is a further step towards the Institute’s mission to empower storytellers on the continent and the diaspora and push the African audio-visual industry forward. Netflix brings its expertise in episodic content development, production and insight into global content trends.

“This program is a response to the dramatically changing broadcasting ecosystem which has a very important role to play in building a thriving media ecosystem in local markets and providing episodic creators with distribution opportunities,” adds veteran Ethiopian broadcaster and Realness Institute Director of Development and Partnerships Mehret Mandefro.
