The County Government of Mombasa through the department of Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works has announced a new circuit of traffic operation dubbed ‘Double 2 Doube 2.’
The new traffic schedule that has been gazetted will see a number of road closed and affected to enable effective traffic management within the central business district (CBD).
The county issued an order to the public signed by the County Executive Committee Member in the department Taufiq Balala which stated that the system will begin operation in February 2, 2022.
“Pursuant to section 26 subsection 1C of the Mombasa County Roads Act 2016, The County Government of Mombasa do hereby gazette the temporary closure of roads within Mombasa county for effective traffic management as per the attached schedule. The effective start date shall be on 2/02/2022,” read part of the notice.
Traffic is expected to flow in one direction from the Buxton junction through sheikh Abdullah Farsi road, through Gamel Abdelnasser Road , through Jomo Kenyatta Avenue to Ronald Ngala Road and back to the Buxton junction.
The flow shall be unidirectional and use both sides of the carriage way whilst during the operation, traffic will only be allowed to exit Sheikh Abdulla Farsi Road from Narok Road.
“During the operation, traffic shall only be allowed to Gamel Abdelnasser road from Maalim Juma Road, Mackawi Road and Biashar Street,” read part of the public notice.
Traffic shall also only be allowed to join Jomo Kenyatta avenue from Msanifu Kombo Road, Kwa Shibu Road, George Marura Road , Faza Road, Kisauni Road and Kakamega Road.
Still on Jomo Kenyatta Avenue, traffic shall only be allowed to exit from Mackawi Road, Joe Kadenge Road, Jomvu Road, Muslim Road, , Naivasha Street, Ibrahim Road and Keino Street.
It is however not clear if the new traffic schedule is going to replace the Happy Hour traffif management system that was introduced in 2019.
During the Happy Hour, the county blocks incoming lanes to the CBD from Shell Petroll Station along Fidel Odinga Road all the way to Coast General Hospital along Tom Mboya Avenue.
The move has been hailed for clearing the backlog of outbound traffic by allowing flow on both lanes for a specific period of time depending on traffic.
