A showdown is looming at the Mombasa County Assembly tomorrow [Tuesday] during the morning session over the position of the majority chief whip.

A former confidant to Mombasa governor Hassan Ali Joho, Freretown member of county assembly [MCA] Charles Juma Kitula was to be officially replaced as Chief whip last month before the adjournment of the sittings of the assembly .

Ganjoni/Shimanzi Ward MCA and transport chairperson Priscilla Mumba has replaced Kitula after being alleged to have shifted his loyalty to Nyali MP Mohamed Ali alias Jicho Pevu.

A section of women MCAs had disrupted the sitting  before it was adjourned to  tomorrow [Tuesday].

The changes were contained in a letter to the county speaker Harub Khatri from ODM county secretariat signed by Geoffery Busaka.

But there was drama at the county assembly when Deputy Speaker Fadhili Makarani, who was chairing the day's session, allegedly skipped the day's session paper in which he was supposed to communicate the ODM letter to the county assembly.

He instead adjourned the assembly until October 9 to enable members to travel and attend this year’s County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) games in Uasin Gishu County.

The move prompted women MCAs to pretest and forced the day's sitting to end prematurely.

Hell broke loose with the deputy speaker being accused of taking sides instead of being neutral to an extent of ignoring the ODM letter to effect the change.

Led by nominated MCA Amriya Juma Boy they demanded the county assembly to recognize their colleague's leadership.

She was flanked by her colleagues who wanted the county assembly to respect party changes and decisions.

They displayed the ODM letter outside the county assembly while dancing and chanting party slogans bringing operations at the county offices to a standstill.

According to a copy of the letter which replaced Kitula as county majority chief whip the move will address the gender issue at the county assembly leadership.

ODM county boss has accused embattled Kitula of not being effective in his position and that on several occasions he failed to whip the party members towards party agenda.

Busaka said in his letter he regrets the party was forced to come with the painful decision to replace Kitula with immediate effect.

Former Prime Minister Rail odinga ordered the dredging exercise at the Indian Ocean stopped.

According to Raila who is also the AU High Representative on Infrastructure, the dredging  is interfering with efforts to recover  bodies of the two victims of Sunday Likoni ferry tragedy.

The victims Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter perished after their car reversed and plunged into the Indian Ocean.

"I want to give an order here that the dredging works stop immediately so that those who are working here can work without interference," said Raila.

Divers involved in the recovery exercise have also been complaining of poor visibility due to dredging thus hampering the exercise.

The dredging is being done to widen and deepen the channel so as to allow bigger ships to dock at the Mombasa port.

Raila was speaking after he met the families of the victims and visiting the channel.

President Uhuru Kenyatta today called on leaders to promote peace and unity saying that is the only way Kenya can achieve its development objectives.

The President, who spoke at the funeral of the former chairman of the defunct OlKejuado County Council Daniel Kasirimo ole Muyaa, said leaders should emulate the late civic leader and several of his peers who stood for the national values of peace and unity.

He said ole Muyaa's contribution to national cohesion can be seen in the manner in which, as a Maasai community elder and opinion leader, he participated in laying the foundation for Kajiado to become a peaceful and progressive cosmopolitan county.

“Kajiado has never had any ethnic tensions and this is as a result of the leadership of people like ole Muyaa,” said President Kenyatta. 

The President narrated how the late Ole Muyaa mentored and ushered him into elective politics saying the former civic leader was a close family friend. 

“I have known him for many years as a friend and political teacher. He loved peace and unity,” President Kenyatta said as he called on leaders to emulate selfless leaders like Muyaa. 

The President reiterated that his cooperation with opposition leaders is underpinned by the understanding that national unity is important for the achievement of the country’s development objectives. 

He said growth and progress cannot be achieved when the country is divided.

“Let us unite, have peace, grow our economy, fight poverty and fight unemployment together,” said the President.

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku, Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko and COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli also spoke at the funeral service attended by thousands of Kenyans. 

Former VP Musyoka eulogized the late Ole Muyaa as an astute grassroots politician and leader who stood for national unity, peace and progress throughout his public life. 

Governor Lenku and MP Tobiko thanked the President for the development projects being implemented by the national government in Kajiado County including the recently completed Kajiado-Mashuru-Loitoktok road. 

President Uhuru Kenyatta has noted with satisfaction the progress being made by the country in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. 

The President, who reiterated Kenya's commitment to the achievement of an "AIDS Free Generation”, called on African countries to allocate more local resources to the fight so as to bridge the financing gap occassioned by the dwindling external support. 

“I want to reaffirm my personal commitment to this particular agenda,” President Kenyatta said today at State House, Nairobi when he hosted Champions of an AIDS Free Generation in Africa.

The Champions for an AIDS Free Generation, who were led by the former President of Botswana Festus Mogae, are a distinguished group of former presidents and influential African leaders committed to an AIDS-free generation. 

The leaders, individually and collectively, rally and support regional leaders towards ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat. 

The leaders who included former President of Malawi Joyce Banda and Professor Miriam Were congratulated the President for the various health sector reforms including the ongoing rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

They urged President Kenyatta, to continue rallying other Heads of States to show more political goodwill in the fight against HIV/AIDS on the continent.

The champions particularly requested the President to spearhead efforts to make African nations to allocate more local resources to the fight against HIV/AIDS, expand access to ARVs and other primary healthcare services. 

“External assistance is declining and even where it is available it is in decline and its covering fewer and fewer of the population on our continent. That means we have to try and do something about it including allocating more local resources,” Mr Mogae said. 

Former President Banda congratulated First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for championing maternal and child health care through the Beyond Zero Initiative. 

The former Malawian Head of State said the First Lady's sustained health campaign has contributed significantly to Kenya’s efforts to lower HIV/AIDS prevalence especially among mothers, children and the youth.

President Kenyatta said Kenya’s UHC plan is aimed at consolidating resources from local and international sources to ensure expanded access to primary health care including HIV/AIDS services. 

He said expanded access primary healthcare especially preventive services will help slow down the spread of the viral disease. 

The President mentioned the campaign to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) by 2022, the various affirmative actions to empower women and girls as well as the growing budgetary allocations to health and education sectors as some of the other government interventions aimed at achieving the goal of an AIDS free population. 

The champions were accompanied to State House by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, Health PS Susan Mochache, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Siddharth Chatterjee and Amref Health Africa CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi.

Kenyans have taken to social media to express their dissapointmenmts with the different government agencies including the Kenya ferry services following Sunday's tragedy at the crossing channel which saw a mother and her daughter lose their lives.

Its now three days since the tragic incident and the bodys have not yer been retrieved with family, relatives and friends camping at the channel waiting to at least get the bodies of Mariam Kigenda (35) and her daughter Amanda (four) and give them a beffiting send off.

One of the many Kenyans who has also expressed dissapointemnt is musician Akothee.

Akothee took to social media to share her experience with the ferries.

"Mombasa is my second home and Diani is my 3rd home, i basically live and operate with ferry more than anything else. Whenever i want to rest or visit my investments the fear i have on that ferry beats the odds of turbulence, the ferry operators always think i am rude" she said.

Adding " Its such a sad thing to lose lives just like that, I have always wanted to park in the middle of the cars and trying not to be the first or last. This cut so deep but when death knocks our doors even new breaks fail & we cant say no. May their souls rest in peace. Heratfelt condolence to the family".

The Kenay Navy has also been on the receiving from Kenyans with some questioning why they could move and save the lives of the mother and daughter.

Construction work on the former Municipal stadium now Mombasa county stadium has began.

The construction is being undertaken by a Turkish firm called Stara supplies and construction company at a cost of 1.7 Billion shillings.

Speaking during a visit at the stadium, Mombasa County sports executive Munywoki Kyalo revealed that the FIFA standards  stadium which will be a 12,500 sitter capacity is expected to be ready after 14 months.

He also revealed that the project is fully funded by the county government.

Kyalo noted "All materials will be imported from Turkey.It will be a closed pitch that will be able to allow games even during rainy seasons".

The stadium will also have integrated indoor arena that will host volleyball, swimming, and Volleyball games.

The stadium had been left unattended and a poor state for close to six years, since 2013 during the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

Other facilities which will also be found in the stadium includes Mosque, modern changing rooms, a media center fitted with VAR computers and a conventional center that will accommodate about 3,000 visitors.

Kyalo further told journalists present during his visit that the county government is also planning to construct another football ground in Likoni, Peleleza and Kisauni.

"We want to make sure that at least we have a stadium in every sub county" said Kyalo.

Some of the satdiums constructed by the county includes the Bomu and Uwanja wa Mbuzi stadiums.
