Film makers at the coast are appealing to the government to offer incentives to promote local film makers as they also promote the region as a top tourism destination.

They also want film regulatory agencies in the country to align their taxation policies to cushion them from multiple taxation that are levied by county and national governments.

This they said has locked out potential film makers outside.

Speaking on the sidelines of a production set tour  at the Funzi Island in Kwale county, PETE producer Daudi Otieno Anguka, says the industry growth was promising but expressed disappointment on the tough and exorbitant fees charged by the devolved units.

“The governments needs to look into the matter of levies, we are suffering as film makers because county governments are charging us and also we are forced to pay hefty fees for licenses at the Kenya Film Agencies, what we are calling for is at least a reduction or incentives for showcasing our destinations,” said Anguka.

Globally, film makers showcase unique tourist destinations as well as the rich traditional culture  through Movies, consequently attracting revenue for the country through promoting tourism sector.

In Kwale County for instance, the once forgotten gem located in the Indian Ocean is now on the limelight for its rich traditional Swahili heritage and culture after attracting regional film makers.

Funzi Island, located 70 kilometers south of Mombasa, ‘a couple of kilometers’ into the deep sea off the Coast from a small village knows as Bodo is now home of ‘PETE’, a show which airs on Maisha Magic East.

“We are experiencing influx of tourists, since we got an opportunity to showcase our rich traditional Swahili culture of the Funzi” says Anguka.

Maisha Magic East child, PETE is a new Swahili soap opera led by Daudi Otieno, who is the producer of the show and a veteran cinematographer with over seven years experience.

This was evident when viewers of PETE, a show which airs on Maisha Magic East had a rare opportunity to visit Funzi Island seen as one of the local tourism opportunity that offered the indigenous communities a lifeline to make money from selling their wares.

Funzi is a well-kept gem located in the Indian Ocean and carries rich traditional Swahili heritage that lends PETE its authenticity.

“We are on the take off of the film Industry, a lot is being needed to make this industry a global business venture. If the government can lessen the levies or create a breeding environment for upcoming actors, then our dreams could be realized,” said Gilly Owino, alias Mzee Msiri an actor of the show.

The winners had an all-expense paid trip to the world of PETE where they interacted with the cast and crew and watched the live making of the show.

Winners also got the full island experience which included a boat cruise followed by sundowners as well as an authentic island meal.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) yesterday held a public hearing on the proposed construction of a liquid petroleum gas terminal in Kipevu, Changamwe.

The public forum which was headed by the Mombasa County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo was attended by representatives of different government institutions, experts, members of the public and civil society  .

Mombasa County Assembly speaker Aharub Khatri was also present.

The proposed construction of the 30,000 metric tonnes common user liquefied petroleum gas terminal, a project of the Focus/ Interperl container freight station will cost  US dollars 60 million.

Focus/Interpel Container Freight Stations [CFS] chairman Faisal Abbas said after Environment Management Authority (NEMA] approval and its completion the project will create employment opportunities for local residents.

He said the project will create employment opportunities both during its construction and upon its completion and operation.

"We are likely to employ almost 600 local residents at the site during the construction process before its completion before the 2022 general election," he pointed out.

Abbas said both companies have enough land to put up the facility without evicting the local residents.Members of the public and the civil society raised their opinion about the project with some supporting while others opposing.

On his part speaker Aharub kahtri called on the members of public to approach the issue with sober mind and think about it before presenting their views.

"I;m not here to support or oppose the project, i'm only here to represent the county assembly but what i would like to emphasize to you is to take this thing seriously and be sober so as not to regret later" said Aharub

The Focus/Interpel chairman refuted claims he had shifted business from CFSs to the liquefied petroleum gas terminal as a result of the government decision to transport all cargo and goods out of the port of Mombasa using the standard gauge railway.

Faisal said the management came up with the project in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta's big four agenda for the country to have a conduce environment for the youths.

He assured the region's residents the project will end monopoly of gas supply and ensure a healthy competition in the business.

‘’Let me make it clear that the management has taken enough precautions on safety matters before and during the operation of the facility," he pointed out.

NEMA is expected to present a full report depending on the views from all the parties including members of the public who live within the area after 14 days. Among the issues raised by the members of public were safety issues and fear of eviction.

A former confidant to Mombasa governor Hassan Ali Joho has been replaced as the Mombasa county assembly majority chief whip.

The controversial Freretown member of county assembly [MCA] Charles Juma Kitula  who shifted his loyalty to Nyali MP Mohamed Ali alias Jicho Pevu was replaced by his Ganjoni/Shimanzi Ward counterpart, who is county assembly transport chairperson, Priscilla Mumba.

The changes were contained in a letter to the county speaker Harub Khatri from ODM county secretariat signed by Geoffery Busaka.

But there was drama at the county assembly when Deputy Speaker Fadhili Makarani, who was chairing the day's session, skipped the day's session paper in which he was supposed to communicate the ODM letter to the county assembly.

He instead adjourned the assembly until October 9 to enable  members to travel and attend this year’s County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) games in Uasin Gishu County.

The move prompted women MCAs to protest and forced the day's sitting to end prematurely.

Hell broke loose with the deputy speaker being accused of taking sides instead of being neutral to an extent of ignoring the ODM letter to effect the change.

Led by nominated MCA Amriya Juma Boy they demanded the county assembly to recognize their colleague's leadership.

She was flanked by her colleagues who wanted the county assembly  to respect party changes and decisions.

They displayed the ODM letter outside the county assembly while dancing and chanting party slogans bringing operations at the county offices to a standstill.

According to a copy of the letter which replaced Kitula as county majority chief whip the move will address the gender issue at the county assembly leadership.

ODM county boss has accused embattled Kitula of not being effective in his position and that on several occasions he failed to whip the party members towards party agenda.

Busaka said in his letter he regrets the party was forced to come with the painful decision to replace Kitula with immediate effect.

The Women leaders today held a meeting with Governor Joho, it is still not yet clear what they discussed.

The newly appointed chief whip was flanked by the National Women caucas chair Milka Moraa Ngare who is also a nominated mca at the msa county assembly on an ODM ticket during the meeting with Governor Joho.

A section of leaders from Lamu County have called on the government to make sure that youths from the county are given priority when it comes to employement at the Lamu port.

The leaders mainly county assembly members (MCAs) argue that it will  only be fair if the youths from the area benefit directly from the project.

"It's our resources that have been used in this project including land  so it will only be fair if we als benefit from it" said nominated MCA Amina Kale.

On his part Faza MCA Fahad Dini called on the government to stick to their promise of providing jobs to 1,000 youths from the county arguing that the number of those who have so far been employed have not reached 1,000.

"When the President comes here to officially open the port let him also flag off the jobs and empowerment for our youths. We also want the managing director (MD) of this port to be from Lamu" said Kiunga MCA Abdallah Babadi.

Early this month, President Kenyatta visited the port and announced that the first berth of the new Lamu Port will be opened in October.

The President who expressed satisfaction with the progress of the ongoing construction works at the seaport said the mega project would create the much-needed jobs for Kenyan youth.

"Since I was here last year, it is true you have worked hard. Very soon, next month, we will be here to open the first berth which I am told you will have completed," said president Kenyatta.

Adding ""We will launch by seeing a ship dock here to offload cargo. Offloading of cargo will be the beginning of jobs not just for you alone but also for the youth of Lamu and the entire Kenya".

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) procurement officer Noran Mugambi has been moved to the dock yard section.

According to internal sources this is the first reshuffle made by KPA Procurement and Supplies Manager Aza Drenge since he was promoted to take over from Anthony Nyamancha.

Noran, who is younger sister to the former KPA Principal Personnel officer Mureithi Mugambi, is among employees under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission [EACC].

Other KPA employees under the anti corruption radar are former procurement manager Yobesh Oyaro who was the first victim of the reshuffle and he is currently head of strategy at Kisumu port Inland Container Depot.

Nyamancha, who took over from Yobesh who has been transferred to head liaison markets in Kampala, Uganda which is perceived as a demotion, is also on the list of those being investigated by the anti corruption office.

Also in the list of 18 KPA officers under investigation is KPA head of conventional Cargo Engineer Flex Ongwem.

Multi-talented singer and one of Kenya’s best live performers - SERRO releases twin videos for her viral single 'Kasyoki wa Mitumba' , a witty love song dedicated to her love interest Kasyoki, a clothes seller.

The release comes after a clip of SERRO performing a raw acoustic version of the song went viral garnering over 200,000 views across her social media platforms.

The clip elicited exciting reactions from Kenyans including Churchill, Bien of Sauti Sol and veteran presenter FredObachi Machokaa, who all shared the clip and applauded SERRO’s songwriting, vocals and guitar playing skills.

Both versions of the song were produced by Mutoriah of Me & My Cousin Entertainment and videos shot by renowned director Johnson Kyalo.

Speaking on the release, SERRO says, “I’ve always wanted to write a song inspired by Kamba pop but it had to be not too serious, so I decided to go with a cheeky love story. When people listen to this song, I hope it will make them smile, maybe leave them in stitches, and remind them of that special someone.”

In the first version, SERRO borrows heavily from Kamba Benga – a genre that is synonymous with fast-paced rhythmic beat and bouncy finger-picking guitar sounds, to create an infectiously danceable track.

Its video incorporates a comical script that sees SERRO stalk and seek attention from Kasyoki, who seems unbothered at first before finally giving in to her advances. The video which was shot at Toi Market in Nairobi also features dancing cameos by traders from the market.

In the mellow version, SERRO turns the rather upbeat song into a slow tempo romantic tune with a soothing guitar line. Its minimalistic video focuses on SERRO dressed in African-themed attire, serenading lovers while playing an acoustic guitar under a spotlight.

“Kasyoki Wa Mutumba” is SERRO’s second release in 2019, following the release of “Ya Dunia” in May, and the 4th single off her soon to be released album “KUWE”- a collaborative project with the young musical genius - Mutoriah.
