United Green Movement Party Threatens To Sue COG For Closure Of Health Facilities
The Council of Governors (COG) should rethink its position of denying members of the public access to healthcare due to the ongoing stalemate in the senate over the county revenue sharing formula.
United Green Movement [UGM] General Secretary Hamisa Zaja reminded the Chair of the COG Governor Wycliffe Oparanya that access to healthcare is a constitutional right.
“The party is saddened by the news that the COG has suspended County services,” she said.
Zaja said they are perturbed by the COG’s remarks that part of patients’ health services won’t be available due to the stalemate over the county revenue sharing formula.
The UGM Secretary General said in the press statement that it’s regrettable that it is the poor in Kenya who are going to suffer.
Zaja added that the rich can afford private healthcare but the lives of the poor in Kenya are at stake.
She insisted the constitution is very clear that the right to healthcare is fundamental and cannot be given in small measures or be limited.
“I am sorry to say this is denying citizens their constitutional right which must be protested,” she pointed out.
The UGM spokesperson said lack of money is not a reason to deny the Kenyan people their constitutional right to healthcare.
Zaja wondered why the government finds it easy to get money to build stadia, markets, roads and other things, which are good avenues for perpetrating corruption.
She said it is the obligation of the county governments to promote and provide healthcare and they have to find funds for it.
“The lack of money does not take away these obligations. Granted that there is a cash crunch in the counties thanks to a bigoted senate,” she pointed out.
Stop Depending On Handouts, Shahbal Tells Omar
Mombasa businessman cum politician Suleiman Shahbal has hit out at former Mombasa Senator Hassan Sarai Omar over his criticism of the Buxton house project.
Addressing the media at a hotel in Mombasa, Shahbal accused Omar of using the project for 2022 political gain.
"You dont have any job and have never been employed, you only depend on political handouts so stop making alot of noise. We dont need politics of activism and noise" said Shahbal.
Adding "You have never even consytructed a kiosk in your life let alone a house yet you say this is a small project. This project is for the benefit of the people of Buxton and will also provide jobs for the youth, you have political handouts, these youths don't have those handouts, they want jobs".
Shahbal revealed that over 1,000 people have already applied for the houses which will be constructed from January 2021, including politicians adding that over 400 residents have already accepted to move out of the area and they start receiving their compensations on 1st October.
Shahbal charged "Stop being hypocrites, some of those politicians that you walk with have already applied for those houses yet you are here pretending to be criticising the project".
In a meeting with a section of residents from Buxton on Sunday, Omar opposed the project arguing that Shahbal had opposed the same project in 2013.
"Why the change of heart now, nothing has changed about the project, the people are still the same. What is it that you see now that you did not see in 2013 " said Omar.
Adding “This is the problem of installing businessmen in leadership,”.
Nyali Mp Mohammed Ali also opposed the project calling on Shahbal to instead construct the houses in slum areas like Moroto, Kambi Kikuyu and Kisumu Ndogo.
Shahbal further noted that he is not 'desperate' to take over from Hassan Joho as Mombasa Governor in 2022.
"Let me make it very clear, I'm not desperate to become the next governor of Mombasa, I'm only desperate to help the people of Mombasa" he said.
The Buxton estate will include 150 units for the county staff and another 352 rental or purchasable units.

Tems Announces Brand New EP 'For Broken Ears'
With a sound that is both sweetly intimate yet global in nature, Nigerian singer, writer and producer Tems announces her debut EP For Broken Ears, for release this September 25th.

We Don't Need BBI, Implement Two-Thirds Gender Rule, Says Zaja
United Green Movement Party Secretary General Hamisa Zaja has called on president Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga to ensure the two thirds gender rule is first implemented before campaigning for the building bridges initiative (BBI).
According to Zaja Kenyans don't need a referendum but implementation of the existing laws in the constitution.
"BBI just came as a suggestion box, we have our own constitution which is the best and only needs to be implemented. We cannot have a suggestion box and a constitution at the same time and try to make them equal, this is unacceptable'' said Zaja.
Adding "We are supposed to address what affects us and what has not been implemented including the two thirds gender rule which affects Women in this country. They are now telling us that our problems as Women will be solved through the BBI, if they failed to implement the two thirds gender rule will they really be able to solve our problems yet they are still the same people".
Speaking at a media briefing at the Reneissance centre Mombasa, Zaja revealed they will soon petition Chief Justice David Maraga to ensure that the two thirds gender rule is implemented.
Zaja also took issue with ODM leader Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho for criticising Deputy President William Ruto for his magnanimity.
Zaja charged "There are some people complaining that the DP is donating wheelbarrows, Bodabodas, handcarts. Mr Dp please continue with your donations, the handcarts will help us fetch for water, the water tanks will help us store water"
