Dorcas Kavata, the mother of Judica kalinga who scored 403 marks in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) can now breathe a sigh relief after Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir came to her rescue.

Nassir has promised to offer full scholarship to Judica as he joins St Brigid's Kimilili Girls High School in Trans Nzoia county.

Judica’s mother Kavata, had previous sought for scholarship from Kwale County, however, was turned away because her records showed she voted in Mombasa County.

Hearing this, Governor Nassir arranged for a meeting with the mother in his office Monday 13th February to assure her of his personal support for Judica.

“Usitie wasiwasi tutamsomesha huyu mtoto kuanzia leo,” said the county boss.

He further added, “If God blesses me with life, then I will continue to support her. She should continue working hard”

Nassir further stated that his office is currently in the process of establishing the Governor’s Scholarship fund to address needy students seeking financial assistance.

Judica’s mother expressed her gratitude to the Governor claiming that she made the right choice in voting for him as the governor and urges him to continue to extend his hand to the needy people in the county.

“I am so grateful to the Governor. He said he will sponsor my daughter throughout high school and university,” she said.

The mother stated that the daughter had great ambitions to become an accountant and declared the opportunity by the county boss to have brought their hopes back to life.

The county boss is widely known for his efforts in prioritizing support for education during his tenure as Mvita MP and now as the Governor of Mombasa County.

Recently, the governor’s reputation peaked the internet over his annual KCPE and KCSE candidates feeding program, a program that pre-existed his tenure as the Governor of Mombasa County.

Residents of Jomvu and Miritini area are a happy lot after the government announced that a section of the road between Miritini to Kwa Jomvu will be completed before the end of this Month.

Transport and infrastructure cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced on Monday, that On 25 February, the road construction will kick off after completion of compensation processes that had delayed its completion.

“We will be here on February 25 to start Miritini to Kwa Jomvu road, as you know it had stalled because of compensation of squatters, but after meeting the European Union we are soon with the president to come here and launch its completion,” said Murkomen.

Area member of parliament Badi Twalib has raised the concerns when deputy president Rigathi Gachagua visited Jomvu area two weeks ago saying the section of the road has caused a lot of untold suffering to motorists.

“The 700 meters’ section has delayed for a long time, stretching from Bayusuf area to the national transport and safety Authority (NTSA), this section had delayed and Kenya National Highways authority has been delaying we ask with humility, to be completed,” Twalib told deputy president Rigathi Gachagua.

Badi said the section of the Mombasa Nairobi highway has delayed for several years forcing huge traffic jams by trucks on the Northern Corridor transit. Residents of the area and public service motorists are the worst hit following the prolonged delays.

“There is a lot of dust coming out when trucks pass by the section that is dusty and untarmacked, if completed then this will change the face of Miritini and Jomvu areas by ensuring the flow of traffic,” said Twalib.

The transport Cs also announced the dualing of Likoni-Lunga Lunga road starting April this year to ensure a good connectivity from the South Coast to the Mainland of Mombasa town.

“In April, we will come to launch the Likoni-Lunga lunga road,”said Murkomen when he toured the Kenya ports Authority on Monday to unveil the new KPA board of management led by chairman Benjamin Tayari.

New KPA MD To Be Known By April

Transport and infrastructure cabinet secretary Cs Kipchumba Murkomen has ordered for the recruitment of a new managing director MD to be in place by April 1,2023.

Murkomen who spoke at the KPA headquarters on Monday  tasked the new Kenya ports Authority Board of directors to embark in the process of recruiting the new MD to replace outgoing MD Amb John Mwangemi whose tenure has expired.

At the same time,Murkomen cautioned the board against any external political interference in the selection process.

The new KPA board of directors is led by Former Kinango Mp Benjamin Tayari.

“We are in the process of recruiting a new MD,and today being the day a new board member takes office, I expect in a week’s time, the process of shortlisting and scheduling of interviews will begin. This will be followed by a transition process before we officially name the new MD by April 1,” said Murkomen.

They are tasked to coordinate among other things to ensure actualization of the Mombasa Port Special Economic Zone, the completion of the remaining Lamu port baths and other major infrastructural projects.

He added, “I want to assure you as the Cs I will not give you illegal orders or ask you to act or do anything against the law.As you take office you are not going to take individual decisions, you must act in unity to avoid bad decisions,’’

The cabinet secretary also expressed his dissatisfaction with the way KPA was structured saying in the near future the ministry will initiate a process to align functions and eradicate bottlenecks’ that have existed deterring the facility to be competitive.

“I am still not impressed with the way KPA is structured, we need to look at how we can streamline some functions and eradicate some bureaucracy to enable efficiency,” said Murkomen.

The Cs said his ministry will embark on a review of the tired 1979 KPA act so that it can be aligned with modern business models and make the authority as competitive as other regional ports of the African Continent.

“There is a need to make a review of the KPA act, and present it to parliament so that it can be strengthened to make the Authority competitive and align it with the current KPA strategic plan,” said Murkomen.

In his appointment, the CS picked one of the youngest board members ,26-year-old Caroline Njoki Maina, a Nyeri blogger. She is the youngest board member KPA has ever had.Murkomen said her appointment signifies commitment by the Kenya Kwanza administration to give equal opportunities to the youth.

Njoki who was unveiled among other board members yesterday is said to be a key participant during the campaign of President William Ruto before and during the August 9, 2022 General Elections.

“Her appointment is unique, I know it sparked a lot of reactions, but I want to assure you, she is here because she is qualified and young, she is up to the task, and this is a good gesture to the government that youth have equal opportunities, “said Murkomen.

Mudi said sustainability of the media industry is key especially at a time when digital media is fast growing bringing about competition.

Mombasa country has inked a business partnership for small, micro, and medium enterprises with a digital marketing organization in the quest to expand and exploit digital market opportunities.

Speaking after penning down the deal on Monday at the governor’s office in Mombasa, Nassir said creation of business opportunities is part of his fulfillment to the pledges he made to electorates during the campaign period.

Nassir announced that a team of county personnel will conduct public forums with an aim to enlighten and uniform the public on the benefits of the deal.

“To support this and ensure that the public has adequate information, we will hold public education forums across all Sub-counties to reach all Mombasa County residents on this potential benefit,” he added.

"From next week, all sub county officers will be doing public awareness out there, we will be doing this campaign online and billboards for people to get this information across all sub counties," said Nassir.

The firm’s Group CEO Eric Muli said the financial service company operating within Kenya and other parts of Africa will enable youth to empower themselves with some of its products.

“We know it’s important for our youth to have access to essential equipment to access the internet and for that reason we will create a program to enable youth to be able to access electronic materials like laptops and phones to actualize their dreams, “said Muli.

There was a sigh of relief for a widow after the court of appeal in Mombasa thwarted an order to exhume the body of her late husband.

The court of appeal  delivered the judgment in favour of Kiran Nazerali, her 20-year old daughter Mahek Fatima and her 18-year old second daughter Nurjehan Nazerali for the body of Anverali Nazerail who was a businessman not to be exhumed according to the family’s wish saying they find no merit in the appeal to allow to quash an earlier order.

Court of appeal Judges Gatembu, P. Nyamweya and G. Odunga set aside a lower court and a high court order made at Mombasa law court under criminal revision application.

The court of appeal judges said in a 15-page judgment delivered through virtual means that there was no enough evidence of suspicious circumstances warranting the exhumation of the deceased's body.

They argued in their judgment that without such evidence the court finds that the case did not meet the stringent threshold to disturb the dead.

"Accordingly, we find that there was irregularity in the manner in which the exhumation proceedings were conducted," the judges ruled.

The court of appeal added that inquires appropriate to such an order were not  made by the lower court before the said orders were made.

The judges argued although the court has power  to give an order for exhumation it is  not an order to be issued lightly.

They argued it has always been accepted that after death there should be a decent and reverend burial of the body

The court said therefore the dead should remain undisturbed for all purposes except when otherwise directed by a  court of law since that is the primary function of the court.

The bereaved family, through their counsel Mohamed Balala and Sborne Lijoodi, had moved to the court of appeal to challenge both the lower court's and high court's rulings in an application by the coast Regional Criminal Investigation office to exhume the body of Nazerali for autopsy to establish the cause of his death.

The two courts had given a ruling to exhume the body which was buried in May last year at the Khoja Shia Ithnaasheri graveyard in Mombasa county in line with Islamic teachings.

The deceased's estranged brother Shakir Awar, a Pakistani national who cried foul over his brother's death, resurfaced two weeks after the burial to seek for the exhumation of the late businessman's body. The prosecution was led by Hillary Isiaho.
