The President said Kenyan sports personalities have been a great inspiration to the youth by demonstrating that it is possible for individuals to utilise their God given talents to improve their livelihood.
President Kenyatta spoke on Saturday at State House, Nairobi, when he handed over a bus donated by Dr Nelson Sechere, an international fundraising expert, to AFC Leopards Football Club.
Dr Sechere is a consultant at African Capacity Building Foundation.
The team was led to State House by its patron who is also the Westlands Member of Parliament Timothy Wanyonyi and it’s chairman Dan Shikanda.
“We thank you and we are happy for what you are doing not only for yourselves but for the inspiration and hope you are giving to your fellow youth.
"The most important thing is being a role model. And you as a youth are a role model and we appreciate and support that,” said President Kenyatta.
The President said the Government is looking into the possibility of establishing stadiums for local teams to enable them raise funds for themselves in addition to utilizing the facilities as training venues.
“You have talked about a stadia we will sit and talk. I agree it is good just like other teams across the world have home stadia, I think it is about time we started having home stadia for our own teams as well,” President Kenyatta told the AFC Leopards team.
The President commended the AFC Leopards technical bench for properly managing the team and urged them to continue working hard to raise the standards of Kenyan football.
“Managing a team that is of national importance is not an easy job. When they lose you get the blame but when they win they take the credit. And all the community will be waiting to see, when they lose they will say the team was okey but the technical bench is the problem,” the President said.
Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi commended the President for supporting Kenyan sportsmen as they develop and transform their talents into sources of livelihood.
The MP thanked the President for stepping in to address the challenge of service delivery in Nairobi County saying city leaders support the takeover of some roles from the devolved unit by the national government.

I can assure you, Your Excellency, as Members of Parliament of Nairobi, we have met and discussed this issue and we are supporting your action and we are going to give you full support until you get Nairobi back to where it belongs,” the Westlands MP said.

Residents Of KPA Pension Scheme Houses Decry Poor State Of The Houses
Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] employees residing in the authority's pensions scheme houses in Mombasa are up in arms over what they term as dilapidated state of some of the houses.
The residents mainly from the Dedan Kimathi estate opposite Pandya Memorial Hospital were in panic after part of a wall of one of the houses collapsed on Friday evening posing danger to Children who were busy playing around.
They said they have been faced with challenges after KPA handed over the units to the old pensions scheme.
Led by Moses Mutalii they argued that the repair and maintenance work was being done without proper supervision.
Mutalii told journalists a lot of money has been spent but at the end there is shoddy work on the house units in the area.
"Over Sh 1.2 billion was spent on the repair of the units but the work was not done satisfactorily," he pointed out.
The resident lamented that all the houses are leaking and have cracks despite Sh 1.2 million being spent.
Mutali pointed an accusing finger at the pensions scheme and the board of trustees for failing them.
He cautioned them if anything happens to the employees or their immediate families they will be held responsible.
"Let the government agencies responsible for housing make an impromptu visit of the units to assess the condition themselves," he said.
On her part, another resident Matreda Mwakireti called on the Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Daniel Manduku to intervene and save the situation.
She argued that they have exhausted all the possible means in solving the problem.
"We now want the MD to intervene since we are tired of the situation " she said.
Truecaller Reveals 1 Out Of 5 Women In Kenya Receive Sexual Harassment Calls And SMS
Truecaller today released the most comprehensive Truecaller Insights report to date. It aims to understand the impact of harassment calls & SMS for women in Kenya, India, Brazil, Egypt and Colombia.
The report revealed that 9 out of 10 women in Kenya receive harassment and nuisance calls and SMS.
The report combines quantitative research conducted by Ipsos in each local market, to get the statistics behind the problem, with face to face interviews with local women to give context and reality to the data.
These are the key findings from the report:
- Looking at the data, sexual and inappropriate calls are common among women in Nairobi, where 1 out of 5 women receive this type of communication.
- 47% of all the sexual harassment calls/SMS comes from inmates in Kenya, and 53% come from unknown people. The fact that the harassers are selecting women at random to harass is perplexing and irritating, especially in a country like Kenya where that level is high.
- Despite it being common for women to receive sexual or inappropriate calls and SMS, there’s a concerningly low percentage of women who think these types of calls constitute harassment. Only 11% of all women who have received sexual harassment calls/SMS consider it as harassment.
- Women in urban areas are being the most affected by sexual harassment calls/SMS. These are the top most affected areas:
- Nairobi
- Mombasa
- Kiambu
- Nakuru
- The research reveals that harassment elicits strong reactions from women. Anger and irritation are the most common feelings towards sexual and inappropriate calls and SMS. Fear and worry are also common feelings that arise when women receive these types of calls.
- Another shocking finding from this study is that only 2 out of 10 women in Kenya have taken action against harassment calls, and very few ever report this to the authority (6%.) For Kenyan women, with little support from authorities and local attitudes, harassment often has to be severe before women speak out. Here are the most common actions against harassment calls:
○ 49% blocked the number
○ 40% ignored the calls/SMS
○ 32% called their operator for help
○ 29% told the harasser to stop
○ 6% reported to authorities
Research Methodology:
This research was conducted by Truecaller with support from Ipsos in India, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt and Kenya. Ipsos used a mobile-based approach for data collection and the same questionnaire was used across the region. In countries like Brazil, Colombia and Egypt the questionnaire was translated to the local language with minor localization tweaks.
The survey was conducted from the period November 22nd, 2019 to February 24th, 2020. The sample size varied from 1000 to 3324 women for each market among the age group 18-40, and women in socioeconomic classes A, B, C1 and C2.
