Beyonce's Global Citizen Fellowship Program Expands To Kenya
International advocacy organisation Global Citizen has today announced that for the fourth year of the Global Citizen Fellowship Program powered by BeyGOOD, the organisation will be expanding for the first time into Kenya.
The application period is now open, until 29th April 2022, for fifteen young people: five from Kenya, five from Nigeria and five from South Africa, aged between 21 and 25, to join the coveted paid fellowship program commencing in July 2022.
Through the program, the 15 changemakers will each engage in a paid, year-long, full-time placement aligned to one of Global Citizen’s four pillars of activity: creative, campaigns, rewards, and marketing.
Powered by BeyGOOD, the Global Citizen Fellowship Program will unearth African youth with remarkable potential.
The Global Citizen Fellowship, supported by Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD philanthropic initiative and US actor and filmmaker, Tyler Perry, aims to empower young Africans to become agents of change, and provide them with tools they need to thrive not just during their time with Global Citizen but also in any future professional environment.
"With young people (under 25years) making up 60% of the population, Africa is reported to be the youngest continent in the world. Therefore, by investing in the development and empowerment of our youth we are securing a bright future for our continent. These are the leaders of the 21st century and beyond. We need to engage them now and we need them to play an active role in changing the African narrative. It gives me a great sense of pride to see philanthropic organisations such as BeyGOOD and humanitarians like Tyler Perry doing their part in the development of these young people." says Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Global Citizen Board Member.
Adding "I’d be even prouder to see more African organisations and humanitarians investing more money and more resources in the empowerment of these young minds. With the little that I have and the powers given to me, I always avail myself to the plight of young people. We must invest in their education and health for the sake of our continent’s wealth. Together, we can conquer these challenges and leave a better world for our young people,”.
Launched in 2019, following the success of commitments made at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in December 2018, the Fellowship is focused on Global Citizen’s vision of eliminating extreme poverty, providing young people with opportunities to gain experience working on social impact projects.
During the course of the year, the fellows learn how to use digital technology for social change, storytelling tactics that shift attitudes, and the process of building lasting professional relationships.
The program also aims to foster an in-depth understanding of the role that innovation plays in an ever-changing digital world.
Ivy McGregor, BeyGOOD, Executive Director says, “With all that is happening in our world right now, educating, empowering and employing our youth to use their voice and vocation to make a positive impact are essential to creating a lasting change."
Global Citizen and BeyGOOD strongly encourage applicants from minorities and underrepresented communities to apply.

“Prior to the Fellowship, I was at university trying to understand my own journey and direction following my experiences during the national #FeesMustFall campaign, where the resistance we experienced fostered self-doubt. The Fellowship journey has added to who I am right now in a sense, where I am more confident in my individual power to play my part in crafting and contributing towards something way bigger than me. Today, in describing myself, I would say that I am a thoughtful person who is conscious of their position in society and is continuously working towards empowering themselves to empower others,” says Lonwabo Nkonzo, 2019 Global Citizen Fellowship Program
Darnelle Fortune, 2019 Global Citizen Fellowship Program also testifies: “The person I was prior to the Fellowship program is a lot different to who I am now, and in the best ways possible. I would describe Darnelle 2.0 as confident, assertive, and a lot more curious. I learned so much, not just from the Fellowship but from my peers as well, and it has completely changed my view of the world. I gained valuable technical skills in marketing and social media, learning how to use digital platforms as tools to create impactful social change.”

Nassir, Shahbal Political Rivalry Plays Out In Public Yet Again
Political rivalry between Mombasa governor governor aspirants Suleiman Shahbal and Abdulswamand Nassir escalated on Tuesday after their supporter's clashed during the International women' day celebrating event held at the Tononoka grounds.
Chaos rocked the event when some rowdy youth from both sides engaged in running battles hurling stones at one another forcing the converners of the meeting to suspend speeches.
Several youth who are supporters of the two Orange Democratic Movement ODM party politicians were arrested by Police for trying to disrupt the women's meeting organized by the Mombasa county government.
Suleiman Shahbal’s wife Rahma Shahbal who was at the function was hurriedly escorted out of the venue by her security when things got out of hand only to return to the venue later.
Normalcy resumed for a while when police were called to quell the building tension, but it erupted again when Mombasa deputy governor William Kingi attempted to deny Nassir an opportunity to address the crowd.
The deputy governor's one minute speech was cut short by heckles, and even after one of Nassir's Supporter unsuccessfully grabbed the microphone from Kingi.
"This is not a campaign function, and therefore we ask Nassir to keep off the meeting, we discourage you not to speak because you will cause a fight and people will be injured, let’s avoid political chaos," Kingi told Nassir.
But when Nassir took to the podium, he slammed Shahbal accusing him of having allegedly hired youth and women groups to bring violence in Tononoka.Nassir asked his supporters to remain calm and avoid chaos.
“Even if they hurl insults at us, even if they throw stones at us, we shall not respond to them, we must be peaceful people because we have a common agenda, that is to improve the lives of Mombasa people,'' said Nassir.
But Shahbal’s wife Rahma Shahbal who had earlier emphasized on good and visionary leadership that is free from insults and intimidation left the venue immediately Nassir started speaking.
"We have five months to elections, we should stop chaos, we need to show love to one another, we are expected to respect one another, as women we should be respectful, we discourage political chaos in the coming elections,'’ said Shahbal's wife.
Rahma has come out to publicly campaign for her husband who is seeking to be elected as the governor for the third time after losing two times.
“My women, I want to urge you to come out in large numbers, I know what you are going through, because I was there, I came from a very humble background, before I met my husband,” she stated.
Women leaders who took to the podium condemned the manner in which the two politician’s supporters conducted themselves in a show of political supremacy. Both Nassir and Shahbal are contesting for Mombasa county governor seat.
Shanzu ward MCA Mamuna Salim Mwawasi and nominated MCA Priscilla Mumba expressed their disappointment with the continued disrespect of women leaders. Some of the women leaders who spoke were heckled and humiliated by rival supporters.
"You have betrayed us as youth, we are perturbed by the kind of disrespect our youth have displayed, we are encouraged to stop using our supporters to humiliate one another. This is bad and should be discouraged,” said Maimuna.
Mumba said leaders who perpetrate chaos or instigate chaos should be voted out because they don't man good for the people," said Mumba.
Other women MCAs leaders present were Fatma Kushe (Nominated), Timbwani ward MCA Mwaka Bakari and Amriya Boy (Nominated).
"They can do nothing in our area,we are in Mvita and Mvita is where our next governor will come from,” said Mumba who is a staunch supporter of Abdulswamand Nassir .
Mombasa women rep Aisha Hussein maintained that she will be seeking reelection through an ODM ticket.
Mvita Mp Abdulswamad Nassir's mother Mama Nassim was also present during the event, she called on Nassir's rivals to brace a tough battle in the race to succeed Hassan Joho as the next Mombasa governor.
"We have not started yet, we will go everywhere, knock every door campaigning for my son Nassir" said Mama Nassim.
Businessman Suleiman Shahbal has said he does not fear any competitor in the race to succeed Governor Hassan Joho.
Shahbal is fighting it out with Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and deputy governor William Kingi for the ODM ticket to vie for the county’s top seat.
Mboko Condemns Molestation Of Female Motorist By BodaBoda Operators In Nairobi.
Likoni Mp Mishi Mboko has condemned the molestation of a female motorist by bodaboda operators in Nairobi.
According to the vocal member of parliament it is regrettable that a woman should be subjected to such vile behaviour by a group of men in this century.
"It is the same women who you attack that gave birth to you and they thus deserve respect," she pointed out.
Mishi said the incident comes at a time when the world is celebrating the international women’s day.
She spoke during an awarding ceremony to commemorate the international women’s day 2022 held at Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa county organized by Pwani Women Caucus.
The lawmaker said women play a critical role in the development of the country and they deserve respect.
She appealed to the judiciary to take severe action against the attackers so that it can be a lesson to others.
"Let them face the consequences and the court should deny them bail for embarrassing and torturing the female driver in public," she pointed out.
Mishi said the riders should serve as a warning to those who take the law into their own hands.
According to the police, over 200 boda boda riders were arrested on Monday night following the incident.
In a viral video, bodaboda operators are captured sexually assaulting the female motorist allegedly for causing an accident.
On Tuesday President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a nationwide crackdown of all boda boda operators following the incident.
“Yesterday, I did give instructions that I have ordered a crackdown on all boda boda operators, starting here in Nairobi and moving across the country,” said Kenyatta.
He was speaking during the International Women’s Day celebrations at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, Nairobi.

Over 23,000 candidates sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education national exams in Mombasa have benefited from a free lunch program courtesy of Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir.
The program is sponsored by the Sharrif Nassir foundation and will see students from all the 380 public and private schools in Mombasa sitting for the exams receive the food packages.
The KCPE exams which began on Monday are expected to end on Wednesday.
Addressing the media at one of the pick-up center in Nyali constituency, the Mp said that he decided to expand the program to other sub-counties following requests from primary school heads.
The program has been going on in his Mvita constituency for the last 12 years.
“All students sitting for the KCPE exams will receive their lunch package regardless whether it is a public or private school, we want them to have the energy to tackle their afternoon papers,” said Nassir.
Nassir said that the food had been approved by nutritionists in the country as he vowed to offer a balanced diet to the candidates during the exams period.
He stated that the program was possible due to the close partnership and engagements with the ministry of education through out the 12 years in Mvita.
“I have been undertaking the KCPE lunch program even before I became the Mvita MP. This year we decided to expand it to cover the entire county after receiving several requests from school heads outside Mvita,”
The food package includes eggs, buns, a banana or apple, packet of milk, salt and water.
“We are providing the students with a balanced diet to ensure that they have the energy to tackle the afternoon papers, ,” said Nassir.
Nassir stated that no money from the Mvita NG-CDF office had been used to cover the cost of the program saying that it was all funded by his foundation.
“I want to categorically state that no public funds was used to sponsor the program, all the monies spent was from the Sharrif Nassir Foundation,” he said.
The foundation he said had partnered with Jomvu MP Badi Twalib to implement the program in Jomvu Constituency.
“We have also partnered with Hon Mishi in Likoni, Said Salim ‘Saedo’ in Nyali and Goshi Juma I Changamwe to ensure the success of this program,: he added.
Nassir added that talks were currently underway with the education ministry to provide lunch to secondary school candidates expected to sit for their national exams from next week.
“I know KCSE candidates have a single paper per day, but if parents allow it for their students to spend an extra hour or two after exams, then we might be able to offer them counseling and get them prepped up for the next days paper before leaving school,” he said.

Stop Dragging My Late Father’s Name Into Your Campaigns, Nassir Tells Political Opponents
Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamand Nassir has asked his political opponents to stop dragging his late father’s name Shariff Nassir into their campaigns for the sake of political mileage.
This is after Changamwe Member of Parliament Omar Mwinyi, asserted that the Mvita Mp had nothing to show politically, except riding on the influence of his late father to stay afloat.
"Some people are now referring to themselves as Shariff Nassir, you are Abdulswamad Nassir and not Shariff Nasir. AStop riding on your father's name. Be proud of yourself, stand on your own" said Mwinyi.
But while addressing a gathering in Junda, Nassir maintained that his father's name is a household name and he has every right to use it for his own benefits and benefits of those who support his gubernatorial bid.
“There is nothing wrong with using or bragging about my late father’s name in my campaigns, because I am proud that I was born by him, if you see people talking about me it is because they have nothing to sell to people politically,” said Nassir.
Nassir is contesting for Mombasa governor seat through an Orange Democratic Movement ODM ticket but will first square it out with his bitter rival Suleiman Shahbal in the party primaries. The duo have embarked on extensive campaigns to woo Mombasa electorate support.
“If I keep on answering those who abuse me on political platforms, when will I get time to work for my people, We must agree that those throwing stones to us, we gather them and make a ladder that will make us grow,” said Nassir.
The two leaders have been hunting for votes in Nyali, Kisauni, Likoni and Mvita constituencies where they have been selling their agenda to the locals ahead of the 2022 polls. Nassir who was the father of the current Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, died November 27, 2005.
“They have now resorted to using my late father’s name, and I want to tell them that, my late father taught me not to be abusive, and I am sure that he has forgiven them for their deeds,” said Nassir.
Nassir said he will continue to seek electoral support as he seeks to get elected as the second governor for Mombasa County.
Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki, MPs Mboko (Likoni) and Badi Twalib (Jomvu)have already declared to support Nassirs bid stating that they have confidence in the ability of Nassir to succeed Joho.
“I can’t accept being zigzagged, so that I can lose focus on what I want to achieve, “said Nassir while addressing a political gathering at Junda on Saturday.
According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Mombasa had 508,223 voters during the 2017 General Election.
The numbers are bound to increase as IEBC plans to start recruitment of new voters ahead of the next general election.
The populous Kisauni constituency had the highest number of voters at 126,151, followed by Mvita (107,091) and Nyali (104,017), according to the 2017 IEBC register.
Likoni had 87,326, whereas Changamwe had 86,331 and Jomvu only 69,305.
I'm Ready To Lose My Seat For Supporting Shahbal's Governor Bid, Says Mp Mwinyi
Changamwe Member of Parliament Omar Mwinyi says he is not afraid to lose the ODM ticket for supporting business man Suleiman Shahbal to succeed governor Hassan Joho in the August 9 elections.
Mwinyi has become the latest strong critic of Mvita Member of parliament Abdulswamand Nassir, after officially endorsing business man Suleiman Shahbal for the top seat.
"So far have I done alot of development for my people of Changamwe, so even if you deny me an ODM ticket, I have nothing to lose,"Mwinyi said, stating that he will not be intimidated for supporting Shahbal.
Mwinyi has poured cold water on Nassir’s ambition saying the two time Mvita Mp does not have what it takes to be the next Mombasa governor,o ver what he termed as leadership incompetence.
Mwinyi who seemed to be unhappy with how Mombasa has been led for the past years, asked residents not to make a mistake to elect a leader who has no interest of serving them
The two times Changamwe legislator, who appears to have launched a scathing attack on Nassir, says Mombasa deserves a visionary leader with leadership skills, to manage billions of county allocation funds.
"I know Shahbal is a man of integrity ,he doesn't want power because of Money, but this young men who want to put on expensive shoes ,watches, I doubt if they mean good for this county," said Mwinyi.
Mwinyi said Nassir has a character of a celebrity who is out to impress through 'very expensive' shoes and attire, at the expense of poor status of the electorates.
"I will go round this time ,to drum up support for Shahbal's candidature because I know he means good for this country," he added.
He was speaking at a meeting convened by Shahbal, where they rallied aspirants seeking political seats in Mombasa to drum up support for Shahbal's candidature.
Nassir and Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shahbal are among the top contenders seeking to succeed Governor Hassan Joho in 2022.
The duo is contesting through ODM party, but ODM is yet to unveil its preferred candidate. This is after the party announced that there will no be sacred cows in party nominations for Mombasa.
